During today’s Apple Special Event stream, the tech giant took the opportunity to refresh one of its most popular tablets. The 6th-generation iPad 9.7” model is being replaced by an all-new 10.2” model that arrives with a new low price of $329.
During the stage presentation, Apple noted that the new 7th-generation iPad is the first to be constructed from 100% recycled aluminum. The new entry-level iPad is also compatible with the Apple Smart Keyboard, which sells for $159, and will be powered by the A10 Fusion processor. This chip is a slight step down from the A10X that lives inside the iPad Pro. The new iPad will retain the Touch ID and Home Button from previous models.
Apple took some time during the stage show to demonstrate some new multitasking features included with the newest iOS release and how they ran on the new iPad. The software update will also be made available for older models, including the iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, iPad Mini 4, and all 5th-generation or later iPads, on September 30.
The new iPad 10.2” will be able to make use of the Apple Pencil, comes with an 8MP camera, and will be offered in both Wifi and LTE-enabled variants. The 8GB WiFi variant will retail for $329 and the cellular-enabled variant will start at $459. A special education model will also be available starting at $299. Apple is taking preorders for the tablets now and they are expected to begin shipping later this month on September 30.
Tim Cook revealed that all new iPad and iPhone purchases would include 12-month subscriptions to the new Apple TV+ service (normally $4.99 a month) that launches November 1. The new device will also have access to the new Apple Arcade gaming service subscription (also $4.99 a month) that launches September 19.
