Celeste opens the book on Chapter 9 DLC next week

Madeline's journey up Mount Celeste looked to be over, but creator Matt Thorson wasn't finished with her adventure just yet. Now after months of teasing one final chapter for the acclaimed indie platformer, Celeste's Chapter 9 now has a release date. It's ready to release this coming Monday.

The news comes via a post announcing the formal retirement of the Matt Makes Games label and the formation of new studio Extremely Ok Games. EXOK will be comprised of Thorson, alongside frequent collaborators Noel Berry, Amora B., Pedro Medeiros, Heidy Motta, and Lena Raine.

"On TowerFall, my collaborators took a larger role than I anticipated, and on Celeste, it was obvious that calling ourselves Matt Makes Games had become silly," Thorson said in the introductory blog post. "Forming EXOK has also conveniently allowed us to restructure things in a more equitable fashion, so that we can all share ownership over our collective efforts."

Chapter 9 will release for free on all of Celeste's various platforms, with the Xbox One version potentially releasing a little later. But you may not be able to get it out of the gate. If you haven't played Celeste to this point, you're going to have to complete the first eight chapters first. It will prove to be a bulky effort, adding over 100 additional levels to the total package. Players will have to use the mechanics they've grown accustomed to, along with several new abilities and items.

As for the future of the new Extremely Ok Games, the studio is already hard at work on their next title. The only information on that it that it is currently code-named EXOK1, but there's nothing beyond that. Expect more on EXOK's next game in the future.

Celeste is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you've forgotten what this platformer is about, you may want to revisit our original review.
