If you intend to move the species forward and evolve, you’re going to have to mate and make some babies in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. Aside from the obvious reasons, the game requires that you have babies in your clan to pass through generations. After all, if you move to the next generation with no babies, your clan will just die off, and that’s a pretty poor way to evolve. In case you’re struggling to mate and give birth, this guide will explain how it’s done. Yes, I’m about to have a birds and the bees discussion with you.
It should go without saying, but to mate and make a baby in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, you will need a male and female primate. You will also need to ensure that they are not related and that the female is fertile. This can all be accomplished by approaching a possible partner, targeting them so they are highlighted, and choosing to analyze them.
Now, in order to mate, you must first build a bond with your partner, which is done by grooming them. Target your potential mate so that they are highlighted, then choose the option to groom. This could go well, or it could go poorly, so it’s important to listen closely to the audio cues and disengage the grooming at the right time. Repeat this process until the bonding meter is full and an on-screen message informs you that a couple is formed. If you're successfully grooming your partner and there is no bonding meter, you could be related, or perhaps already bonded.
From here, it’s easy stuff. Find an open bed and lie down. If you’re carrying any kids with you, drop the kids in the bed using the appropriate button input. Once this is done you will have the option to call your mate, which you should do. Once they arrive at the bed, the option to mate will appear. Do this and the camera will briefly look away, then return to the couple shortly.
If the game announces a “New Pregnancy” then you’re on your way to having a baby.
Giving birth is quite simple but has a major impact on gameplay. You can choose to give birth the moment the pregnancy kicks in, but this will advance the game 15 months. If there are other non-related primates in your clan, you should consider having them mate as well, since more babies are always a good thing. Plus, if you give birth while there are three pregnancies in your clan, all three births will happen simultaneously. More bang for your buck.
