Fans anxiously awaiting NBA 2K20 were treated to a career mode trailer at today's Inside Xbox from Gamescom 2019. The trailer showed off plenty of Hollywood star power, including Rosario Dawson and Idris Elba, and gave fans a look at what to expect when they dive in on September 6, 2019.
The big takeaway from the reveal trailer is that 2K spared no expense when assembling talent for this year's game. Beyond the headliners, the trailer also shows that NBA 2K20's MyCareer mode will feature Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch in what appears to be the role of your player's agent. Original Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson gets some shine, as well as The New Girl's Lamorne Morris. Various NBA personalities are sprinkled throughout the short clip, including LeBron James, who appears to be a mentor of sorts to our protagonist, as well as NBA legend Scotty Pippen.
Just when you thought things couldn't get any wilder, the trailer drops its biggest bomb — Steve Urkel (aka Jaleel White) is featured in the 2K20 MyCareer mode. The unquestioned star of the 1990s TV comedy Family Matters. During the reveal, it seems that Urkel is kindly offering refreshments and use of his trailer to the protagonists during a fancy photoshoot, but is then promptly disrespected by the entire group. This is why nobody likes the incoming youth of America. They have no respect for legit cool. I'll assume that blowing off a legend like Urkel causes our hero great trouble, but we'll have to wait to play the game to find out.
Hopefully, this year is when the NBA 2K career mode can be something great. In previous years, suspect writing and character choices, as well as a truly skeezy monetization system made working through MyCareer mode a real downer. If the team at 2K can relax on the microtransactions and deliver a compelling tale, this game could be one for the record books.
