Watercolor platformer Gris is making its way to iOS devices this month, and you'll be able to take it with you on the go soon enough.
The artistic game, which looks far better than it plays, follows a "young girl lost in her own world" who wears a powerful dress that grants her various powers. There is hardly any text in-game, and instead steps and instructions ar communicated via icons, which is meant to be so everyone can enjoy even if they don't speak English.
Here's the official App Store overview:
"Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities.
GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulously designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of Gris’s world becomes accessible.
GRIS is an experience with almost no text, only simple control reminders illustrated through universal icons. The game can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their spoken language."
I previously reviewed Gris and awarded it a 7 out of 10. Here's what I thought about it:
"We've seen Gris before, back when it was sold in the wrapper of Limbo, Journey, or Ori and the Blind Forest. It's the same old platformer that's being turned around yet again for a new audience with new gimmickry that, while functional, simply brings little to the table. It's easy to fall in love with, at least superficially, until you examine it even closer. It looks great, it's smooth, and you sure can jump a lot – but it's unsatisfying in so many ways that make it difficult to recommend over more competent and feature-rich games in the genre. After all, you know the old adage: beauty is only skin-deep."
You can grab the game when it floats down to iOS on August 22.
