Overwatch Contenders has been home to some of the best professional play outside of the Overwatch League itself. In fact, many of the Contenders have found their way to the league itself, but not before putting together some big-time highlights and memorable plays. Now Overwatch Contenders is about to hit its highest peak so far, with Blizzard announcing an October event called Overwatch Contenders: The Gauntlet.
The Gauntlet will be held from October 9-13 from the Giga Arena in Seoul, South Korea. The teams that are set to make the journey have not yet been determined. However, the invited teams will be comprised of the best performing teams in Overwatch Contenders China, Europe, Korea, North America and Pacific Season 2 Playoffs. Ten of these teams will advance to The Gauntlet. Look for all of these teams to be revealed, following the Pacific Season 2 Playoffs around September 1.
Eight teams will be split into two separate groups, where they'll compete in a double elimination bracket. The six teams that survive will be placed in an eight-team final bracket. Two of the invited teams will receive an automatic bye into the Gauntlet Finals Bracket. Those will be the top teams from North America and Korea. Matches will be determined in a best-of-five format until the Winners, Losers, and Grand Finals, which will be best-of-seven.
Like the Overwatch League and the rest of the Overwatch competitive community as a whole, The Gauntlet will enforce the new 2-2-2 role lock lineups. The Overwatch League itself will also be watching. Team are expected to send scouts to Seoul, where they'll have direct access to teams and players. They'll likely be looking to bolster their squads for Season 3.
Tickets will go on sale on September 9, with more information available on the Overwatch Contenders website.
