The hardest part of any project that focuses around source material is staying true to that source. This problem isn’t a new one, but it’s still one that writers—more specifically screenwriters—still struggle with today. When Ernie Altbacker was approached about making the 12-issue graphic novel series for Batman: Hush into an animated film, he knew the job wouldn’t be easy. The good news is, he was more than up to the task, and he took it on with flying colors.
We recently had a chance to catch up with Ernie Altbacker at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where we learned a bit more about the process of choosing what stayed and what had to go when it came down to condensing the Batman: Hush story into an hour and thirty-minute runtime. When talking with Altbacker, he talked about the writer’s choice to focus on the relationship between Catwoman and Batman, as well as how that segment of the story pushes everything else along.
If you’ve never seen any of Altbacker’s work, and you’re interested in seeing more, you can see some of his writing in action in Rekkit Rabbit, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, The Blue Light, and Justice League Dark.
