Once the many announcements, reveals, and panels during this year’s QuakeCon 2019 came to a close, The Great Quakeholio Tournament 2 kicked off a night full of excitement. Hosted live from the Gaylord Texan Hotel Lone Star Tower, the tournament featured action from multiple classic games that are near and dear to the hearts of QuakeCon attendees. The grand prize of $6000 was awarded to the Grand Champion, who defeated the 31 other entrants, starting in 4-player Quake Champions deathmatch combat.
As the Quake Champions sessions drew to a close, there would be sixteen remaining combatants. These select participants began four-player Score Attack matches in the id Software classic Wolfenstein 3D. Each competitor began cleanly from the start of the game and was given a fixed timer, with the two highest scores of each match advancing to the third round of The Great Quakeholio Tournament.
Following the four matches of the second round, the sixteen player field was narrowed down to eight. These remaining tournament entrants would switch their focus to Doom II: Hell on Earth for a round of four separate 1v1 deathmatch battles with the first player to 25 kills scoring a victory and advancing to the final four. Additionally, one contestant in the field of eight was selected by Long Reads editor David Craddock to participate in a Doom II deathmatch Boss Battle 1v1 exhibition.
The winner of this exhibition would be taking home a brand new EVGA RTX 2080 TI XC Ultra, valued at $1200. Be sure to check out these highlights of great classic id Software games where the stakes are real.
