Nintendo deletes GrandPooBear's Kai-Zero G Mario Maker 2 level

Published , by Asif Khan

Super Mario Maker 2 has been out for nearly three weeks, and players are creating all sorts of levels. GrandPooBear is well known as one of the best content creators in the world of Super Mario Maker 2, but he apparently has drawn the ire of Nintendo as his Kai-Zero G level has been deleted from the game's servers.

Speaking directly to his fans on Twitter, GrandPooBear clarified the situation. He also laid out what appears to be a pattern of Nintendo doing this to him.

"Nintendo just deleted my Kai-Zero G course, one of the most played Super Expert courses in Mario Maker 2. It contained no inappropriate words, pictures ect. It contained no glitches. I am at a loss for words and extremely sad about this. I feel Nintendo just doesn’t want me making levels, or even playing their games at this point (their PR told me as much). For those who don’t know, Nintendo deleted my entire level Library in the first game, then told me it was a 'mistake driven by the automatic mod system'.

I’ve been told specifically by people at Nintendo that it’s not due to my name being Poo multiple times, as there is 2 characters in Nintendo Cannon named that (and the Earthbound Poo is legit part of my name origin) Don’t know if I should continue creating levels at this point

This is the email I received. There is no appeal process. I honestly feel like shit right now and kinda heartbroken. I love this game. I’m a good ambassador for it. Why does Nintendo continue to pick on me?"

"This is Nintendo's final decision," reads the email that notified GrandPooBear of his level's deletion.

Please take a look at gameplay of the level which had the full title Pile of Poo: Kai-Zero G.

There is some speculation that Nintendo automods deleted the level because poo is a banned word, but as GrandPooBear says above, Nintendo PR has repeatedly told him that his user name is not the issue. I can relate to this situation as my Shacknews.com Briefcase Level 01 was deleted by Nintendo in Super Mario Maker 2. The name breaks the rules for advertising, and I was able to reupload the level after recreating it block by block.

Nintendo is taking level titles way more seriously on the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Maker.

It seems like what is going on with GrandPooBear could be a case of auto-moderation gone wrong, but it doesn't explain how he was treated in 2015 and 2016 on the Wii U version. It is entirely possible that Nintendo simply doesn't like seeing kaizo levels on their servers. These levels don't use game-breaking glitches, but feature fun things that players can do within the existing rules of the game. GrandPooBear has uploaded several kaizo tutorial levels and accompanying videos on his YouTube channel that are definitely worth checking out. It is truly unfortunate to see one of Super Mario Maker 2's best players be treated this way by Nintendo, and hopefully the company will resolve these issues before he leaves the community altogether.

GrandPooBear continues the discussion with his fans on Twitter:

"Also, if there is something that Nintendo could point me too that caused this, I would gladly fix that given the opportunity. Given the fact there is no opportunity to do so, not I have no idea what actually caused it, im left feeling like they just hate me. Which is silly, why would they even care about a dumb streamer? But it keeps happening despite me following their rule sets. I don’t know. I don’t want to create this conspiracy around me and Nintendo but it’s starting to feel that way."

We hope this situation is resolved in a way where players can still be treated to the talents of GrandPooBear. He is one of the more positive influences on the Super Mario Maker 2 community and it is sad to see Nintendo treating him this way.
