Four total characters are available, including Mario, Luigi, and two differently colored Toads. Here's how to play with different characters in Super Mario Maker 2.
To change characters in Super Mario Maker 2, players need to dive into the game's Settings menu. This can be accessed from anywhere in the game by pressing the Pause button (the + or Plus button), then by finding and selecting the option labeled Settings — it's the wrench with the red handle.
Once in the Settings menu, players will note the Character section featured in the upper right-hand side of the window. Here they will be able to choose from the game's four characters: Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, and Pink Toad. To change the active character, simply highlight and select the chosen character within the settings menu, then press OK.
After the character has been chosen, it will immediately appear as the player's avatar in the given course and game mode. Characters can be swapped and out at will, so players can feel free to choose the character they like best.
