CPU Wars

The CPU market has been just crazy this year. There was that insane race to the 1GHz mark, (AMD won) those great price cuts along the way, Intel goofing and having to recall their 1.13GHz chip, and Transmeta showing up and confusing benchmarkers everywhere. Then most recently, AMD decides to charge in just the $200 range for their GHz chips. Love it. ZDNet takes a look at the year that was and how things are wrapping up.

Despite uncertainties in the PC market, both chipmakers have big plans for 2001. [...] The corporate platform will be based around the new AMD 760 chip set and forthcoming processor core, code-named Palomino, due to arrive at 1.33GHz in the first quarter, according to AMD. [...] Intel will work to drive the new Pentium 4 chip into the mainstream PC market, even as it pushes the chip's clock speed past 2GHz.

AMD finally got their shit together and made a decent chip in the Athlon and Duron. My 700 oc'd to 975mhz no problem. Good bless them!
