Games like Pokemon Go have paved the way for more AR-based mobile experiences, and the latest is set firmly in the world of Harry Potter. Crafted by Niantic, the same crew behind Pokemon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a new mobile game that allows players to live out their dreams of wizardry through the magic of augmented reality technology.
Originally slated to release on June 21 — that's tomorrow, for those keeping count at home — the game has made a surprise release today in several global territories, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. It's still set to make its formal worldwide debut tomorrow, but mobile gamers in those territories can download and play the game right this moment.
Here's a brief description of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite as featured over on the game's Google Play Store listing:
"From the makers of Pokémon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is the real-world augmented reality (AR) game inspired by the Wizarding World that puts magic in the hands of players worldwide. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is co-developed and co-published by Niantic, Inc. and WB Games San Francisco as part of Portkey Games, a label dedicated to creating new Wizarding World mobile and video games inspired by J.K. Rowling's original stories that place players at the center of their own adventure."
Within the game, players will seek out various Foundables which have appeared across the Muggle World. Users assume the role of a recruit in the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, and will work together collaboratively to solve the mystery of The Calamity.
Like with Pokemon Go, Harry Potter: Wizard's Unite is offered as a free-to-play game on mobile devices. Users can find it available for download over on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
