Xbox fans finally got their first real taste of the next Xbox console today when Phil Spencer, the Executive Vice President of Gaming at Xbox announced Project Scarlett during today’s Xbox E3 2019 conference.
Near the end of the conference, after showcasing titles like Cyberpunk 2077, The Outer Worlds, and others, Phil Spencer stepped onto the stage one last time to talk a bit about the history of Xbox, and the future that the company wanted to embrace and help create.
“A console should be optimized for one thing,” he said, “and one thing only, gaming.” It was a pretty hallmark moment considering how much focus Microsoft tried to put on being the ultimate living room console (including all kinds of TV options and the like) back with the Xbox One. It seems that Microsoft has learned its lesson, though, as Spencer continued by talking about how the team that built the Xbox One X has been at work on a new project.
Titled Project Scarlett—yes with two ts—the new console is said to be four times as powerful as the Xbox One X. Spencer rolled a promotional reel for the new console, which revealed that it should offer support for 8K, 120 FPS, and even offer a new SSD technology that provides almost 40 times the performance of the current generation of SSDs. The beating heart of the new Xbox will be a custom chip based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Navi technology, though no other real details were given about it.
You can see the promotional video yourself above. Project Scarlett is set to release sometime Holiday 2020, so we expect we’ll hear more about it towards the start of the new year, or even as far out as E3 next year.
