Following the reveal of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at EA Play 2019, Shacknews video editor Greg Burke caught up with Brandon Kelch, the game’s technical director, to get more details about the upcoming game’s campaign, combat, and skill trees.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is more than one Jedi’s story. Kelch confirmed that players will cross paths with more than one Jedi over the course of the game’s campaign. Each character will play a different role as players “go on a galactic adventure.”
“We collaborated with Lucasfilm, and Disney on the storyline and the characters, on Cal Kestis and how he fits into the universe, on the design of BB-1, and everything like that,” Kelch said. “It’s been great. It’s been an awesome game to make.”
Kelch also discussed the team’s approach to constructing “thoughtful combat,” Respawn Entertainment’s and EA’s way of describing action systems in Jedi Fallen Order. “We built a lot of different enemy varieties, and they all behave very differently,” Kelch explained. “We put them in different configurations. The hope is that you’ll have to think about how you’re going to approach combat.”
Combat revolves around the lightsaber, naturally. Kelch elaborated on the distinction between melee and ranged combat options: Force powers such as the ability to pull enemies closer—reminiscent of Scorpion’s “Get over here!” spear move in Mortal Kombat—will give players more ways to control pacing and distance in combat.
Today’s EA Play event whisked players to a galaxy far, far away for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s gameplay reveal trailer. The video introduces players to Cal Kestis, the game’s protagonist, and offers an extended look at a mission from the game.
