Apple is planning on getting more serious about security for the smart home. During its WWDC 2019 keynote presentation, the company showed off new features for its HomeKit smart home automation framework, putting a heavy focus on device security. Later this year, the HomeKit ecosystem will be expanding to include security cameras and routers.
Apple will be partnering with electronics manufacturers to release new smart home devices that will support the new HomeKit Secure Video API. This will allow security cameras to upload video to a HomePod for cloud analysis of the footage. After this step, the video will then be uploaded to the customer’s iCloud, where it can be viewed across a variety of Apple devices. New security measure for keeping the video footage secure will be integrated into new routers, protecting the smart home from cyber attacks.
