If you're stuck watching Fortnite contacting services and ultimately failing to login, you aren't the only one. Every now and then when servers go down or server maintenance begins, players will see Fortnite hang when contacting services during the process of logging in. It happens to all players on all platforms, making it one of the more common Fortnite errors.
Whenever a Fortnite player logs into the game, the software runs through a set series of processes, including "Contacting services." As far as the user experience goes, there's nothing noteworthy about this login step. However, when servers go down, or when something in the game is changed, the login will often hang with "contacting services" on screen.
As such, when the Fortnite contacting services error pops up, it's almost always down to server maintenance. Simply put, there's nothing fans can do but to wait until the services resume normal functionality and the login can be completed. This is true for every player across every platform — PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, mobile devices, the works — because it's not tied to the user's hardware, but rather the game servers themselves.
It's a bit of a drag, but given how frequently Fortnite is changed or updated, it's something of a necessity. Fortunately, players can always check the current Fortnite server status by heading over to the Epic Games Public Status website.
Sorry folks: if Fortnite hangs while contacting services, there's nothing to do but wait until the server status clears and the game comes back online. Feel free to fill the time by heading over to Shacknews' Fortnite home page, featuring the latests news, guides, events, emotes, LTMs, and more.
