It would be hard to deny the influence that Epic Games has over the world of video games and, more recently, pop culture in general. Their Unreal Engine is a standard among devs in the industry and they have a massive catalog of franchises that includes Gears of War and Fortnite. For all these reasons and more Epic Games will be honored with a special award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) that will be presented to them at a ceremony during this year’s E3 conference.
According to a BAFTA blog post, Epic Games founder and current CEO Tim Sweeney will be on hand to accept the award on behalf of his company. According to Tim “All of us at Epic Games are honored that BAFTA has awarded Unreal Engine for excellence in technology, and we share this recognition with our partners and the creative community.”
The special award from BAFTA is meant to celebrate the many contributions that Epic Games has made to the world of digital art. Not only do their accolades include their own successful franchises and the Unreal game engine, but their influence has been seen in other BAFTA award winners like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Rocket League, and Mass Effect. Previous winners of special BAFTA awards include Amy Hennig formerly of Naughty Dog, voice actor Nolan North, and Riot Games.
Chair of BAFTA’s Games Committee Dr. Jo Twist OBE, stated: “We are delighted to present this year’s Special Award to Epic Games. Having powered the creativity and imaginations of development teams of all sizes over the years... Epic is at the forefront of the evolution of the global games industry and the impact of their innovation is undeniable.”
The event is set to take place on Wednesday, June 12 at The London in West Hollywood. It’s an invitation-only event, so don’t plan on just showing up and getting in. Congratulations to the whole team at Epic Games on their upcoming special BAFTA award.
