Many video game companies are making big bets on the future of video game distribution. While we are now firmly entrenched in the digital game sales era, there will come a time when most games will be accessed by customers using buffet-style subscription services, much in the same way that movie and tv lovers use Netflix. EA was the first to market with such a service when it launched EA Access onto the Xbox One. After bringing the service to PC users last year, the publishing giant will finally offer the service to Playstation 4 customers.
For those unfamiliar with EA Access, the subscription costs $4.99 a month (or $30 a year) and gives the customer unlimited access to a large vault of games curated by EA. Games such as Star Wars: Battlefront II and Burnout Paradise: Remastered are available with EA Access and can be played indefinitely with a subscription. The only limit for customers is hard drive space on their consoles or PC.
EA Access subscribers also get a few other benefits, including early access to EA’s newest titles for 10-hour trial periods. Subscribers will also gets a 10% discount on all full-price game purchases, downloadable content, and in-game items bought through the service.
“As we continue to invest in digital and subscription services, bringing great games to even more players across more platforms is an exciting opportunity for everyone,” said Matt Bilbey, Executive VP of Strategic Growth. “Our goal is to give players more choice to try and play our games wherever and however they choose, and we’re happy to bring EA Access to PlayStation 4.”
There has been no word if EA plans to bring its premium subscription service for PC, known as EA Origin Premiere, to consoles in the near future.
