Internet buzz surrounding the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie has not exactly been positive overall. Many fans have taken exception to Sonic's new less-cartoony and more-realistic look, and if the latest teaser image showing Jim Carrey in the role of Dr. Robotnik is anything to go by, the notion of making the game's characters appear distinctly human is a common and rather disappointing theme.
As posted to Twitter via SEGAbits, the leaked image finally shows us how Dr. Robotnik (also known as Eggman) will look in the upcoming film. Unfortunately, that look appears to be little more than Jim Carrey with a mustache.
Just to keep things on the level, let's have a look at how Dr. Robotnik looks in the Sonic the Hedgehog canon. This image was taken from Sonic X, the 2003 anime based on the video game franchise:
If there are two things that Dr. Robotnik has been traditionally known for, they would be his portly shape and his enormous whiskers, which bolt out from all sides of his oddly shaped nose. The image of Jim Carrey in the role contains none of those elements. Instead, this new version of Eggman appears to be a slender and well-groomed chap who knows how to put beard wax to good use.
We all know that filmmakers have to take a few liberties when it comes to adapting a video game property for the silver screen. Even if fans aren't totally pleased with the design, the new version Sonic is at least still recognizably Sonic. We're not sure the same can be said here.
Of course, context is everything, and it may be that Dr. Robotnik's new design will make sense in the grand scheme of things. We'll have a better idea of how it all works out once the new trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie releases tomorrow. Until then, we'll just have to stare at Jim Carrey's mustache and convince ourselves that Eggman has seen remarkable improvements after switching to a keto diet.
