It gets old playing as a human sometimes. Luckily, a new game called Darkborn (previously known as Project Wight) from developer The Outsiders is here to liven things up a bit.
IGN revealed the game today, announcing the project as Darkborn to the masses, as it's doffed its old codename. You take the role of an actual monster set in a revenge story against the Viking-esque humans inhabiting the world. This time around, the only monsters you'll be killing, it looks like, are people.
Darkborn finds you and your family of monsters caught up in a terrible conflict between the powers of the world, which is shown off during the 15-minute gameplay reveal, as your family is ripped apart. You'll grow up and evolve from a young monsterling into a sizable predator with speed, strength, and incredible powers on your side.
“Darkborn is first and foremost a game about being a monster,” Goldfarb said. “Playing it is about experiencing that monstrous quality – in first person combat, in novel abilities and movement, and even in enemy reactions to you," said The Outsiders project lead and co-founder David Goldfarb.
“But it’s not traditional in that humans are murderous, cruel enemies bent on your extinction. You yourself are an innocent caught up in a much larger conflict between Powers, the specifics of which become clearer in the course of the game. It’s a classic revenge story, but also a mystery: what happened to the world and your people? Can they be saved?”
It's a curious tale that we're very interested in seeing play out when we can get our hands on it. Right now, it's still very much in a pre-alpha state, so there isn't a release date on the calendar just yet. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates on this gruesome game and get ready to become a monster when it debuts.
