Not only is GDC a great place for video game developers to congregate, the convention also provides a great opportunity for developers to show off progress on their latest games. Such was the case with Ashes of Creation, the upcoming MMORPG from the folks at Intrepid Studios. Shacknews was able to track down Steven Sharif, CEO and creative director at Intrepid Studios, for an interview to learn more about Ashes of Creation, including some of the latest work made on the road to a full alpha release.
The biggest talking point in the interview is progress: Intrepid has been working on Ashes of Creation Apocalypse—a testing ground for the game's newest features—for quite some time, but the game still hasn't reached the alpha stage just yet. However, the team has been putting a big focus on "giving players the agency to change the world around them." Toward that front, the narrative—and indeed the world—is built by the players themselves.
Of course, creating such a malleable experience isn't easy: "The bottom line is players are going to do things out of the ordinary, they're going to do crazy things that you didn't anticipate, and part of the challenge of creating a game like Ashes of Creation is making it capable to withstand those strange decisions."
How does the team cope with such challenges? Be sure to check out the interview above. Sharif touches on everything from the feel of combat to hitboxes, and even speaks toward what sets Ashes of Creation apart from other big-name MMOs on the market.
Any players interested in learning more about Intrepid's upcoming MMORPG release can head over to the official Ashes of Creation website and register to be kept up-to-date on the latest news and developments.
