One of the biggest surprises to come out of this morning’s Nindies Spring Showcase event was the announcement of an all-new game from the team behind Crypt of the NecroDancer. Cadence of Hyrule is the rhythmic rogue-like crossover game you never knew you wanted. Combining the gameplay from Crypt of the NecroDancer with the world of Zelda, Cadence of Hyrule gives players a chance to experience the classic franchise in a whole new way.
Since the launch of the Switch, we have seen Nintendo become more amicable to allowing their properties to appear in crossover games. The first such title was 2017’s Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, which matched up turn-based strategy with beloved Mario characters. Cadence of Hyrule offers a similar mashup by asking players to save Hyrule by way of a music-driven rogue-like.
Crypt of the NecroDancer originally launched on Steam to rave reviews and then became an even bigger hit when it arrived on the Switch. Apparently, it impressed the team over at Nintendo so much that the Cadence of Hyrule project was born.
The game will feature randomly generated overworld and dungeon areas to move through while working to the beat of 25 classic Zelda tunes that have been remixed specifically for Cadence of Hyrule. Players will be tasked with out-stepping a variety of classic Zelda enemies by learning their movements. Plenty of classic Zelda items will make an appearance, as well as the spells and weapons found in Crypt of the NecroDancer.
Visually, the game offers a presentation that strongly resembles The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but with a higher-resolution look. Due to the structure of the gameplay, map traversal will work with the beat of the soundtrack rather than the smooth scrolling of the 16-bit classic.
Cadence of Hyrule is scheduled to launch later this spring on Nintendo Switch.
