If your tabletop gaming sessions are distinctly lacking in sex, murder, and political intrigue, it might be time to take a trip out to Westeros. Fortunately, such is now possible, as HBO has teamed up with Dire Wolf Digital to unveil Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker, a new tabletop game set in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe.
Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker is played with between five and eight players, and makes use of two double-sided game boards, six double-sided character boards, and over 30 mission cards. According to a press release for the game, the focus is to scheme and weave plots to align with or overthrow the Iron Throne:
"Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker is a game of deception," the release reads. "One player claims the Iron Throne. The others become Lords and Ladies of the great houses of Westeros, scheming for the King’s favor, for power, or to bring a dynasty to its knees. Loyalists square off against traitorous conspirators in a game where secret agendas intertwine, and only the wise can tell allies from enemies."
The new Dire Wolf Digital tabletop game is coming out in spring of this year, which should coincide nicely with the premiere of the final Game of Thrones season on HBO. Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker will cost a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $35, and will include the following components:
HBO's Game of Thrones is certainly no stranger to intrigue, being based on one of the most popular and most brutal fantasy fiction series that still hasn't been finished. Come on, Martin, please release The Winds of Winter. The folks at Dire Wolf Digital are well experienced in creating card games, too, having pushed CCG The Elder Scrolls: Legends to its peak before focusing its attention to new CCG release Eternal. Given the pedigree of all parties involved, we're certainly eager to see how Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker shapes up. Be sure to look for its release later this year.
