Reggie Fils-Aime is officially retiring from his position of Nintendo of America COO and President and will be replaced by none other than a man named Doug Bowser. All jokes and memes aside, the internet wants to know who is this Doug Bowser and is that his real name?
Doug Bowser is Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Bowser originally joined the team at Nintendo of America as VP of Sales in May of 2015, and quickly ascended the ranks to Senior VP a few years later.
This is the same role that Reggie Fils-Aime held at Nintendo until he was promoted to President and COO. Not a lot of information about Doug Bowser is public knowledge, however, he has been in the games industry for quite some time now.
Bowser has previously worked at Electronic Arts, a major video games publisher, as Vice President of Global Business and Planning, as well as at Procter and Gamble, an American consumer goods corporation. In recent years, Doug Bowser oversaw the production and release of the Nintendo Switch, a product that has sold extremely well for Nintendo.
Shacknews had the opportunity to speak with Doug Bowser at E3 2018, where we picked his brain about esports and Super Nintendo World. Bowser talked about the way Nintendo approaches esports in their products, like Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and how the company choses to support these ventures:
Our real focus is just trying to bring these types of events forward to let people have fun playing our games, but at the same time, we don't want to lose focus on just making our games incredibly accessible for the family that may be sitting on the couch playing local co-op.
Reggie Fils-Aime is set to retire on April 15, 2019, at which point Doug Bowser will take over. It will be interesting to see how Doug Bowser fills the spot left by Reggie, who has become a staple in the lives of Nintendo fans all over the globe. And, yes, Doug Bowser is his real name and he will be the President of Nintendo of America. Look out, Mario.
