Apple users haven't seen or even heard whispers of a new iPod Touch since the launch of generation six back in 2015. That changes today as there have been sightings of new iPads and a seventh generation iPod Touch in the code of the latest iOS update. The company registered new devices in the last few weeks and a developer dug into the latest iOS code.
The Verge reported the news, via MacRumors, that developer Steven Troughton-Smith had dug into iOS 12.2 to find the references to new iPads and a 7th-generation iPod Touch. He believes the iPad model numbers include four new iPads, two with WiFi and two cellular, all without Face ID. The other model number, the outlier in the bunch, seems to belong to a seventh generation iPod Touch that also does not feature Touch ID or Face ID.
Apple registered seven new iPads with the Eurasian Economic Commission last week, and it is possible Troughton-Smith has unearthed a few surprises coming out of that bunch. All in all, this would mean, among the new models, there could be an iPod Touch, 9.7-inch iPad, and Ipad Mini in development and revealed sometime this year.
While Apple may have given up on reinventing television, these new models may signal efforts to bolster the already strong grip the company has as mobile computing. The iPod Touch hasn't had a refresh is a long time, but was a staple for the company at one point in time.
