January has come to a close and Black History Month is finally upon us! Throughout February, Twitch will be celebrating black content creators by featuring them on the front page, sharing their stories on Twitch Weekly, and earning money for people of color in the tech fields.
Along with featuring different talent on the front page, Twitch is raising money for Code2040, an organization working to close the access gap for Black and Latinx engineers in tech. Here's the organization's full mission:
Our mission is to activate, connect, and mobilize the largest racial equity community in tech to dismantle the structural barriers that prevent the full participation and leadership of Black and Latinx people in the innovation economy.
- VISION: Our vision is the equitable distribution of power in an economy shaped by the digital revolution.
- PURPOSE: For this vision to come to pass, the country will need an innovation economy where Black and Latinx people are contributing at all levels in all roles, at a proportional rate to their demographics in the United States. We are here to make that happen.
- GOAL: Through mentoring, managing, training, and/or organizing, the Code2040 community impacts 100,000 people—10% of the entire tech industry—and our leaders are shifting the landscape of three tech geographies outside of the Bay Area.
The Twitch team has also revealed the full schedule for the featured Black History Month streams and you'll see a different face every day, starting tonight.
In addition to watching these wonderful streamers and supporting Code2040, community members all around can share their own stories on social media using the #TwitchUnity and #BlackHistoryMonth hashtags. The Twitch team is planning to share some of those stories on Twitch Weekly every Friday at 1PM PT on the official Twitch channel. The team will also be doing Black History Month trivia night at Twitch HQ. More will be revealed throughout the month.
Check out as many of the spotlighted creators on Twitch's front page throughout the month and see if there's someone new to you that you'd like to continue supporting and following. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.
