After development previously ceased on developer Splash Damage's title Dirty Bomb, the game is now completely free to play.
Splash Damage took to Twitter to alert fans of the change, noting that the latest game update has now been completed, and there have been a series of final fixes made to the game. The post was meant to be a "celebration" of Dirty Bomb, letting players both old and new experience "everything" the game had to offer without paying a cent.
Now, RADs, the game's premium currency, have been removed entirely and remaining RADs in players' hands have been converted to Credits. You can no longer purchase RADs and they are no longer being offered as rewards.
Steam Trading has now been enabled for additional items as well, and you'll be able to earn items at an even faster pace than before with an updated credit earn rate. Splash Damage is all about making sure players have fun with the game now that it's had its last hurrah. This includes the reintroduction of items from the game's back catalogue which are now back to purchase since there are no more real money purchases. It's all detailed in an exhaustive blog on the Dirty Bomb website.
This all follows the announcement last October that the company would no longer be working on the game.
"We’re sorry for the recent radio silence. You deserve better and we haven’t been there for you. It has been a challenging couple of months full of sensitive decisions that we had to make regarding the future of Dirty Bomb. It’s with a heavy heart that, after a bug fix build ships in the upcoming weeks, we will be ending live development and updates on Dirty Bomb," the studio said in a statement.
Dirty Bomb's servers will remain live until the end of 2019, but after that, Splash Damage states there have been no decisions made about the game's future at this point.
