CES 2019: LG's rollable 4K OLED TV debuts this year

Published , by Kevin Tucker

We always expect to see something cool at CES, and LG has already set a new CES 2019 highlight by unveiling the new Signature OLED TV R. In addition to being what looks like a fine HDR-enabled 4K TV, the LG Signature OLED TV R features a flexible display that is able to roll itself an out-of-sight coil that hides away in the lower speaker cabinet.

LG to CES 2019: Let's roll one up

It's hard to imagine just what LG was thinking with the design of the Signature OLED TV R, but we can say for certain it's something we never knew we wanted until now. Check the rolling action out for yourself in the video below, offered courtesy of the LG Electronics Twitter account.

Fully extended, the LG Signature OLED TV R 65R9 features a crisp 65-inch class 4K HDR display. The base of the unit serves as a cabinet for its 4.2-channel 100-watt speakers, which are powered by deep learning AI as well as Dolby Vision audio. Several smart features are throw into the mix, including voice support as well as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support.

As can be seen in the video, the screen itself can be suspended at different heights. There's one option for watching traditional TV content, and another that seems suited to smart features like music playback and maybe even news or weather updates. According to a report from CNET, it can even roll up partially to show 21:9 ultrawide content without the usual letterboxing. The device can even be used with the screen fully retracted, simply as an attractive and distinctly modern sound system.

Seems like LG has been cooking up this display for a while, but the CES 2019 announcement specifies that the company intends to put the Signature OLED TV R up for sale sometime in 2019. It's possible that we'll hear more details about the rollable LG TV, including more about its intended price point, in LG's upcoming CES 2019 keynote.
