The first glimpse of what Sonic the Hedgehog may look like when the live-action/animation hybrid film hits in 2019 has arrived.
IGN debuted an "exclusive motion poster" today that shows off a silhouetted Sonic outlined in neon blue with the film's tagline "A whole new speed of hero" as well as the movie logo. It looks, as you probably imagined, terrible.
The Sonic the Hedgehog creative team spoke to IGN about some of the design decisions, including Sonic's fur, which should in reality be quills.
"That was always Stage 1 of adapting it to what the real world is and what a real animal would be like,” said executive producer Tim Miller. “It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It’s part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature.” Right. Okay.
As far as those cringeworthy kicks? Well, that's the result of trying to bring him into the future.
"We looked at every different variation of what shoes he's worn and we're trying to pay homage to that and also make it current and present day in what we think a Sonic of today would wear," said producer Neal Moritz.
But these aren't really the only concerns surrounding Sonic. One must also ponder his strange build, and form that looks as though he's actually a human wearing a fursuit for some reason. It's just a bizarre, totally strange look for the character, from what we can surmise from the teaser poster itself.
It remains to be seen what the actual movie will feature in terms of plot and cringe, but if you're looking forward to seeing Sonic translated to the real world, you may be in for a bit of a letdown if this first look is any indication.
