Every now and then in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players will be notified of a Challenger's Approach. These approaching Challenger battles generally correspond with a chance to unlock a new fighter. However, these characters must first be beaten before they will be unlocked. Assuming players lose that initial fight, they may wind up thinking the chance to rematch Challengers has been lost forever. Luckily, it hasn't. Here's how to organize a rematch against challengers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and replay for the chance to unlock new characters.
Rematches with Approaching Challengers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can be arranged by making a dive through the game's menu. If a Challenger approaches and the player loses the battle, head over to the main menu and look for the Games & More section. In there will a small glowing icon displaying a set of double doors labeled Challenger's Approach near the lower right-hand side of the screen. Select it to see a list of the previous Challengers, then choose the option to replay them.
It's worth noting that these Approaching Challengers can't be replayed in any order; rematches must coincide with the order in which they approached the player. Fortunately, the second time around, players will likely either be more familiar with characters, or they can choose a more powerful fighter from the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tier list.
For those who don't know, the Challengers Approaching notification almost always signifies the chance to unlock a new character. This typically happens after making a run through the Smash Ultimate Classic Mode. The character who appears on approach is not random, either; they're tied to the character used to complete a run through Classic Mode. For instance, details on the Smash Bros subreddit show that conquering Classic Mode using Samus unlocks Dark Samus, while completing a Classic Mode run with Dark Samus options the option to unlock Cloud as a playable character.
It's always possible to start a rematch against approaching Challengers in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and replay for another chance to unlock new characters. There does appear to be a time limit for how often these challengers can be fought against, but that time can easily be spent learning how to unlock other Smash Ultimate characrs.
