As a celebration of all things games, the annual Game Awards serve to reward excellence in game development and give a podium to new game announcements. The 2018 version of the show has followed suit with one big announcement after another. Not to be outdone by the competition, the folks over at Double Fine Productions chose to unveil the sequel to their 2005 cult hit Psychonauts during the third hour of the show. Psychonauts 2 has long been rumored to be in development and is now seeing the light of day.
The world premiere trailer gives players the first look at what developer Starbreeze has been hard at work at over the last few years. No direct gameplay footage was seen in the video, but we can expect a hefty dose of the adventure platformer that the original was known for. Psychonauts was also heavy on puzzle elements and the sequel will likely retain those bits. No official date was given for the game beyond 2019, but we previously reported that the game would likely not ship until after 2018.
Only time will tell if Double Fine Productions can pull off another winner like they did with the original game. At the end of the trailer, fans are asked to visit the game’s crowdfunding campaign site at Fig to help finance the development. Double Fine’s track record with crowdsourced games has been pretty strong in recent years, so this seems like a safer bet than most.
