Comcast will soon be rolling out a new product for its Internet-only subscribers: a set-top box that will allow users to stream video from apps like Netflix or YouTube.
The set-top box is Comcast's solution for cable-less households, and is planned for launch next year. Comcast hasn't set a price for the upcoming box, according to MSNBC, nor how much service will run customers.
Currently, Comcast customers can use the X1 platform it offers, which aggregates cable service with apps like Netflix and YouTube, just like the planned streaming box will offer. It's meant to be a beacon for customers who get overwhelmed by all the options available to them to watch their favorite shows online, and still fits within the Comcast branding portfolio. While it isn't meant to compete with Roku or Apple TV or similar products, it's a boon for users who wish to opt out of traditional cable services.
Comcast is going to be pushing the product to its customers who only have internet service, which it views as the primary driver behind its telecommunications business. IT currently boasts about 25 million total subscribers. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates on what the product will offer and when it will become available.
