Development on the free-to-play shooter Dirty Bomb (formerly Extraction) is ceasing.
Developer Splash Damage broke the news to players this week with a lengthy letter detailing the decision regarding Dirty Bomb and everything that went along with it.
"We’re sorry for the recent radio silence. You deserve better and we haven’t been there for you. It has been a challenging couple of months full of sensitive decisions that we had to make regarding the future of Dirty Bomb. It’s with a heavy heart that, after a bug fix build ships in the upcoming weeks, we will be ending live development and updates on Dirty Bomb," read the letter."
Splash Damage detailed the journey to making the game viable and "feature-rich" with "tons of new content," but lamented that despite the time and resources that went into the project, there were "some challenges" the team was unable to overcome, and as such can't justify continuing work on it. As a result, the All Merc Pack DLC will be refunded to anyone who purchased it by January 31, 2019, with the money refunded to players' Steam accounts and the unlocked Mercs remaining.
The game's servers will be available for the foreseeable future, as long as players keep them populated enough to make keeping them up viable. Splash Damage concluded its letter by thanking players for their support, and reiterating that the "future is bright" at the developer, with plenty of new announcements in the works that the company "can't wait to work with you on."
