The bloody battefield is about to be a bit more beautiful. For Honor: Marching Fire is Ubisoft's next major step for their competitive brawler, delivering a new faction with new fighters, the PvE Arcade Mode, and 4v4 Breach mode. The Marching Fire update can be purchased, but there's also a free update coming that will visually enhance the game for all players in a way usually reserved for remasters of older games.
“We wanted this game to be alive and to ensure players keep enjoying the game,” says For Honor Art Director Christian Diaz to Xbox Newswire, “so for me it was natural that we would do anything we can to improve the game on each level. So on my side, on the 3D programming team, this is what we came up with: ‘What can we do to improve the visual experience of the player?’”
In this update, For Honor gets a revamped lighting system, improved textures, new sky gradients, and more. This particular change started out as a side project and expanded with the support of multiple teams at the studio.
“What we achieved with this remaster is that we can convey a better feeling of what you are seeing and experiencing,” says Diaz. He cites the example of the Valkenheim PvP map, the frosty northern home of the Viking faction. With the improved lighting and snow effects, you feel more strongly that you are doing battle in a frozen, forbidding place where the cold is severe.
Another new addition that arrives with Marching Fire is Arcade Mode. It features randomly generated combat scenarios and players unlock rewards along the way by completing them. We've got a full walkthrough of what to expect in the video below. Shacknews also interviewed the For Honor creative director about the new mode.
For Honor is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For Honor: Marching Fire launches today and the remaster update is free to all players. Xbox Live Gold members automatically receive access to Marching Fire's Breach mode.
