Trover Saves the Universe interview: Justin Roiland talks improvisational design

Published , by Kevin Tucker

Shacknews recently had a chance to speak with the one and only Justin Roiland, Founder of Squanch Games and co-creator of sci-fi series Rick and Morty, to learn more about the team's development approach, specifically toward the notion of improvisation when it comes to design and dialog.

"This isn't to say we don't script moments, because we do. There [are] definitely moments that are typed out and scripted. But a lot of the best stuff is stuff where we're sort of just following more of an outline, like, 'Okay, we know this needs to be X, Y, and Z... Okay, I got it,' and then I'll just riff a few versions of what that line might be.

"The trickiest thing when you're doing that, though, is just pacing. We don't want it to be too long; that shit can go off the rails real quick."

Roiland also discussed the idea of keeping non-scripted moments to a minimum, alleging that in those instances the editor becomes the arbiter of the game's humor. With that said, the team has definitely kept to a certain feel for Trover Saves the Universe, and there's little doubt that the game will have a lot to offer for fans of Roiland's signature humor.

Trover Saves the Universe is slated to land on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR sometime next year. For more great videos, including games convention coverage and developer interviews, be sure to check out Shacknews and GamerHub.tv over on YouTube.
