Telltale update: Walking Dead Final Season canceled, team remains only to finish Netflix project

Published , by Kevin Tucker

Today has not been a good day for fans, followers, or employees of Telltale Games. Following an earlier story that reported on the suprise layoff of employees and subsequent bankruptcy-related closure, sources are now reporting that the final episodes of The Walking Dead: The Final Season have been canceled, and the 25 employees remaining at the studio are solely focused on finishing the Minecraft Story Mode collaboration with Netflix.

According to a report from USGamer, a number of anonymous sources have confirmed that "The Walking Dead Final Season will not be completed," leaving the remainder of Clementine's story completely unfinished. Furthermore, Telltale gave a statement saying that the remaining employees are there just to "fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners."

With this news in mind, it's safe to say that the closure of Telltale Games has effectively terminated the rest of the company's projects, spelling an end not only for The Walking Dead: The Final Season, but also for the Stranger Things project and the planned sequel to The Wolf Among Us.

Studio co-founder and former CEO Kevin Bruner recently took to his personal blog to confirm that the closure rumors are indeed true, saying that he's "saddened at the loss of a studio that green-lit crazy ideas that no one else would consider." A statement from Telltale itself said that the closure was ultimately borne of poor sales despite positive feedback from fans.

Now that Telltale Games is no more, it seems that the upcoming Minecraft Story Mode project will be the last we see of the studio. While not exactly a game, the unique Netflix collaboration will apparently allow viewers to enjoy Minecraft Story Mode from within the Netflix app in what the company calls an "interactive adventure."
