Apple is looking to help safeguard its customers in times of crisis with the new Fall Detection feature on the Apple Watch Series 4.
During today's Apple Special Event streamed live from the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, CA, Apple unveiled the new Apple Watch, which is positively teeming with special features and cool new abilities. One of the most useful and potentially live-saving, however, is the watch's new way to sense whether its wearer has fallen down.
If the watch detects that you've fallen and remain motionless or still for one minute following the event, it will display an alert asking if you want to send out an "emergency SOS." If you do not respond to this prompt either to close it out or agree to the alert, the Watch will automatically place a call to emergency services. It will share your location data and also send it to your emergency contacts to ensure your safety.
Along with the slew of new heart monitor features, Fall Detection is a game-changer. Many of us have elderly family members or friends that need this extra layer of protection, or maybe we have disabilities among us ourselves that necessitate this kind of safeguard. Either way, it's an excellent new way to ensure folks wearing their Apple Watch can continue to live safer lives by way of technology. Out of all the new bells and whistle announced for the Apple Watch Series 4, this one may well be one of them most worth applauding: It could save you or a loved one's life someday.
Apple put it best during the presentation: "Fall Detection is a feature we hope you never need, but it's nice to know it's there."
