According to a report from GameIndustry.biz, it appears Microsoft had previously been hard at work on a VR HMD for the console that it, unfortunately, ended up shelving.
In an interview with chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols, Nichols stated that the company simply had no plans to make a VR headset for the system, but a report unearthed by CNET has revealed just the opposite. In fact, it seems that there was once a VR HMD in development, but it was put on ice until technology improves going forward.
According to CNET's sources Microsoft had apparently been looking for partners to work on games for the headset, which would have featured a screen with the same quality as the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, though didn't offer any further specifics about hardware or other specs for the potential HMD release.
Microsoft decided to wait on the project, however, until headsets and VR tech in general is more affordable and cost-effective for potential buyers, as it still faces several roadblocks with the current setup and the tech's potential right now. Though the Xbox One X was reportedly created with VR in mind, it's hard to believe the company might want to skip out on any potential revenue with a console-specific release, as PlayStation VR is enjoying a modicum of success now, but opting to wait is a good idea when you consider all the risk factors involved with putting yet another HMD on the market.
It remains to be seen if we'll ever get this headset from Microsoft in the end, of course, but it sure would be cool if it did happen.
