The folks at Perfect World Entertainment and its newest development studio, Echtra Games, announced today that the Torchlight franchise is coming back in a new shared world experience known as Torchlight Frontiers. Frontiers is being developed at Echtra by a team headed up by Max Schaefer, former Runic Games and Blizzard North co-founder. Runic Games was responsible for the first two Torchlight games. Torchlight Frontiers will be available for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC upon release.
Torchlight Frontiers is expected to be heavily designed around the online experience. The original Torchlight was a single player game and its sequel, Torchlight 2 introduced multiplayer to the franchise. “Perfect World Entertainment has had a strong working relationship with Max Schaefer, dating back to the original Torchlight game, and we believe in his vision to evolve the Torchlight series,” said Yoon Im, senior vice president of publishing at Perfect World. “Max has put together an all-star team of developers, and we continue to be amazed by the sheer level of talent and wealth of experience that they bring to Torchlight Frontiers. We’re proud to have Echtra Games as a part of the company.”
Fans of Torchlight can get their hands on a playable version of the game at both Gamescom and Pax West later this month.
