Sony celebrates 500 million PlayStation sales with limited edition PS4 Pro

The latest limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro celebrates the 500 million sales landmark with an exclusive gold-on-transparent-blue style.

PlayStation has been having a lot of success this console generation, thanks in no small part to successful exclusive titles like Detroit: Become Human or God of War. In fact, the brand has become so popular that the platform has just reached a new sales milestone of 500 million PlayStation units sold worldwide. To celebrate this achievement, and to thank fans for their continued support, Sony is releasing special 500 Million Limited Edition PlayStation 4 Pro console bundles featuring a sleek new color scheme, expanded storage, and a packed-in PlayStation camera.

"This one's for you," a post over on the PlayStation.blog reads. "Thank you for helping us reach this incredible milestone." Further in the story, PlayStation Worldwide Marketing senior vice president Eric Lempel once again thanks fans for their support, and offers up details about the new system. Here's his full description:

"As translucent colors are always a fan-favorite, this is a great opportunity to bring this color to the PlayStation 4 Pro system as a ‘thank you’ to our fans," Lempel said. "To celebrate this exceptional milestone, we are announcing today a global release of the 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro, featuring a translucent dark blue console shell and matching DualShock 4 wireless controller, PlayStation Camera, Vertical Stand and mono headset.

"In addition, each system will have a commemorative copper plate on its front, with its limited edition serial number etched on. And, for the very lucky few who can get them, we have a few ‘extra special’ hardware units with serial numbers that commemorate important events in the history of PlayStation."

The new system comes packed with a 2 terabyte hard drive and includes not only the PlayStation camera, but also a special 500 Million Limited Edition DualShock 4 controller, the likes of which will also be available for purchase separately for a suggested retail price of $64.99. Players can also pick up a 500 Million Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset featuring the system's translucent design for $99.99, though it appears the headset won't be appearing in any console bundles.

The 500 Million Limited Edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle will become available at major online retailers starting on August 24, while the limited DualShock 4 and Gold Wireless headsets will become available at select North American retailers this September. The console will be priced at $499.99 USD or $639.99 CAD, and Lempel notes that "these special hardware units will be in very, very, limited quantities," with only 50,000 units planned to be released worldwide.
