Today's Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and there was a lot of information reveals at a rapid pace. If you missed it, here's a breakdown of the latest reveals for the new game. The first and arguably biggest announcement was the addition of Castlevania's Simon and Richter Belmont as playable fighters. A couple other echo fighters were revealed as well.
Stages are now listed in the order they were added to the series, just like the characters. There's also a new Stage Morph option where you chose two stages so your match alternates between them during the fight. Music was previously tied to each stage, but now the selections are only tied to the franchise represented by the stage. Thus, you can pick from a larger collection of music for each stage. There's a new sound test option where all the songs are grouped by series. You can listen to them like albums and the handheld mode of Nintendo Switch allows you to listen with the screen off, like using a mobile music player.
New items and assist trophies are also being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. New items include the Banana Gun, Killing Edge, Bomber, Death’s Scythe, Staff, Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom and Rage Blaster, among others from a wide variety of different video game franchises. For assists, we have Zero from the Mega Man X series, Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog, Krystal from Star Fox Adventures, Rathalos from the Monster Hunter series, Shovel Knight, and the evil Moon from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Rathalos is the first assist trophy that can also appear as a boss on a stage.
Classic mode returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, meaning each fighter will have set of stages and fighters that they must take on consecutively. The new Stamina Battle mode has fighters fight until all stamina is lost and there's one fighter left standing. Adding to the Final Smash Ball, there's a new option where players fill up a Final Smash meter over the course of a battle. It's ensuing Final Smash is not as strong as the one from the Smash Ball.
Squad Strike is a new addition that allows players to choose 5 or 3 characters to use consecutively against an opponent in one battle. Tourney Mode, on the other hand, allows players to set up tournaments for up to 32 players. Smashdown mode forces players to choose new characters, as each elimination removes previously selected fighters from the options. Training mode is even improved, featuring an exclusive stage that features a grid that helps determine the distance and trajectory of abilities and fighter knockback.
Toward the end of the Super Smash Bros Ultimate Nintendo Direct, a new mode was teased. It is blurred out in the first image of the game's menu UI, but more will be revealed in the near future. The last huge tease for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the addition of King K. Rool as a playable character. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional updates.
