As if finding all the other collectibles in God of War wasn’t hard enough, now there are secret items to get as well. Hidden behind a series of inputs is a secret pommel that offers Kratos a bit of extra damage for his Levaithan axe. Getting the secret pommel early on in God of War is pretty simple, and it might help with a few of the tougher boss fights.
Getting the secret pommel in God of War requires access to the top of the Muspelheim Tower that sits on the southern shore of the Lake of Nine. Accessing this area can be done from the side elevators or from the back using the Lookout Tower when the water has been lowered a second time. Thankfully, it’s not necessary to find all the Muspelheim ciphers, as the secret is in the realm of Midgard.
After reaching the top of the Muspelheim Tower, position Kratos in the center of the golden circle, facing Tyr’s Temple. From here, use Kratos to look at the brazier on the left and the brazier on the right, as well as directly at Tyr’s Temple, but it must be in the correct order. It’s as easy as it sounds, simply press the thumbstick in the correct direction to turn the camera in the following sequence:
A gong noise will reverberate around the Lake of Nine if this was input correctly and the next set of inputs can begin. If no sound was made, the above input will need to be made again. The next set of directions to input after hearing the noise are:
A second gong noise will echo around the lake and a realm tear will appear before Kratos. This is not one of the many realm tears that can be found and count towards the Midgard total – this is a unique realm tear that only holds a reward. Interact with the realm tear to receive the secret pommel, Forbidden Grip of the Ages. This is a legendary axe pommel that increases all of Kratos’ stats and adds a concussive wave to the end of the R1 combo. What this means is that after completing a three-hit combo with the Leviathan axe, a large shockwave will blast out from the axe, dealing damage to everything in its path.
For those who are curious, the secret pommel's location was discovered by deciphering the runes on the God of War collector's edition map. The runes spelled out a story about Brok and Sindri as they sought out a hidden treasure but eventually split when neither of them could remember where it was hidden. Pretty sneaky!
With the secret pommel unlocked, it might be a bit easier to defeat the Valkyrie Queen or even just grind through Niflheim. Make sure to keep it locked to Shacknews, especially the God of War guide, for all the walkthroughs and collectible guides a gamer needs.
