We had to put down our 15+ year old rescue today. My wife got him 5 years before we met, and he was a super sweet dog. We did one of those in-home euthanasia vets and it was well worth the extra money. Bought him a nice streak last night.

wife and I have done a bunch of tests - called him from another room, tried diverting his attention with loud noises while almost on top of his head while he's been idly looking the other way, dog whistles, regular whistles, even shaking his favorite treat bag literally millimeters above his head/ears from behind.. nothing.

when he came to us he had a realyl BAD ear infection that we immediately medicated, and evidently after doing some research this in of itself can cause the deafness..

My wife is actually in contact with a bunch of other rescue parents that got his siblings - there were like 5-6 of them - and at least a few are saying that theirs are deaf as well.

What does this change? nothing at all.. we'll re-adjust our training to be more visually driven. it's a minor thing. it does mean that unfortunately no off-leash at dog parks or in new places, but that's OK he doesn't want to be more than 4 feet from us anyhow. in fact, this is actually just perfect. we have:

1 runt kitty who wasn't supposed to make it
1 kitty with a shattered hip that we had to fix (thanks again to the shack for donating on that!!)
1 kitty who is a mean grumpy thing because he was taken away from his mother FAR too early
1 other rescue dog who was abandoned and is just a wreck with new people. we later found out she had been shot in the ass with an airsoft pellet that was left in her..

so yeah - a deaf dog? just adds to the island of misfit toys theme we've got going on.

Ever since we lost Scraps our other cat Daisy who would play with him nightly has been running around at night yelling out for him. Which has been heart breaking. So my wife felt bad and wanted a friend for her, and she found a cat at a rescue that needed to be adopted.

He's originally from Louisiana, the rescue was calling him Tux, but I came up with the name Mardi. Like Mardi gras. On the car ride home while trying out names, he didn't respond to anything my wife tried, until she said Mardi, and then he meowed. And he meowed the next two times she said it to him. So we're sticking with Mardi.

He's so chill it's crazy. At the rescue he fell asleep while I was holding him. He wants to meet the other animals, but he's being treated for a parasite so we have to keep him quarantined for the next 4 days.

The best part is, he makes muffins every time you start petting him. He's a muffin making machine.

Also we found a new car. So things are getting back to normal.

Dudes, cancer.

Got diagnosed with leukemia this week. Post funny things to cheer me up.

I have a son now. He is the cutest baby in the world. I know everyone says that. But all of them except me are wrong.

We lost Steve Carrotlord a couple of months ago. He had molar issues and although we tried everything we could, he wasn't able to recover. We adopted Vincent a few weeks ago, who was left in a box outside of a pet store. He is settling in and likes to do big wheeks!

RIP my white and gray tabby cat after 8 months struggling with kidney disease, she was the most loving cat ever and we miss her a lot. She was 17.
