Heh. In July 1997, Wired ran a cover story predicting 25 years of vast global economic expansion that would bring increased prosperity, an improved environment, and unprecedented opportunities to achieve social justice. They also published a list of scenarios that could stop that progress.

15 wowsHoly fuck. Guy stops a stabbing attack in a NYC subway. The guy was really trying to murder this poor lady. You can see the narrowly avoided stabbing motion.

15 wowsThis reminds me of a story.
I work on ships, and a tough job came up one day. I said I'd give it a shot. I was under no obligation to complete it, but I like a challenge.
The job was to run a power cable from the forward part of the vessel to the after part of the vessel. The cable had to be run on a cable tray that ran through the double bottom tank at the very bottom of the vessel, under the water line, and in a space filled with baffles or 'lightening holes'. They're basically frame connection pieces that make up the structure of the vessel and have holes just large enough for a man to fit through uncomfortably, spaces 2 feet apart. ( http://lh4.ggpht.com/_poOMUbd3H4k/TPITWZ5UUZI/AAAAAAAAAHM/trI0nhgjOO0/s800/Midship%20constructions.jpg - See the part of this diagram labeled #1 at the bottom.) I would estimate the holes were were about a 1.5 foot wide by 2.5 foot high.
It took 3 hours of work, crawling 30 metres through the center double bottom tank, pulling a cable and carrying tools in a space that was so tight that I couldn't do anything except flip over on to my back or my front. Imagine the scene in Shawshank Redemption, except instead of a steady pipe, you're crawling through holes in plates, spaced 2 feet apart, that cut in to your muscles or bones when you put your weight on them. Being in that Shawshank Redemption pipe would have made the job much less uncomfortable. To make matters worse, there was a hatch with bolts that needed to removed to complete the job at the center point of the vessel ( https://app.catsy.com/320/Events/4004596797/UMCManholes.jpg ) in the tightest space imaginable - such that just trying to move the impact gun in to place to remove a bolt was a huge physical effort.
It was basically the worst kind of cave spelunking I can imagine.
I'm in good shape, but by the time I was finished, I was more physically drained than I've ever felt in my life, and I was covered in lines of bruises from laying on the baffled plate holes. It was by far the most difficult single job I've completed in 10 years of working in the marine industry. -

14 wowsMy daughter just got her license a few weeks ago. This morning she hit a parked car in the school parking lot and it was a fucking 2024 JAGUAR owned by another 16 year old girl. Why would any parent buy such an expensive vehicle for a teenager? I can’t wait to see how much this is going to cost!!

14 wowsHoly fuck. DNA testing firm in Toronto has been knowingly sending out false DNA tests for a decade, to customers all over the world.
The main problem here being false paternity tests. But they've also been giving out fake indigenous status cards. CBC initially got wind of this story and sent in a DNA sample from a couple of pet dogs, and they came back having indigenous DNA. lol

14 wowsBack in the early 90s a couple friends and I went on a quest to find the unfinished nuclear power plant where they filmed the movie. We got close and then literally stopped and asked someone in a gas station where it was and .. they TOLD US.
At the time there was no internet, no GPS, nothing. We just ham fisted our way there. Here's what it looks like today: https://www.google.com/maps/@35.0378781,-81.5118874,1217m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu
That main building you see still there is where the interior sets were. The water just south of it across Owensby Street is where the unfinished cooling tower was with the exterior Deep Core set.
We actually got busted by security the first time we went in, but we went back. Tresspassing? Yeah, but it was worth it.
Crappy early 90s Sony Handycam 8mm video: https://youtu.be/uWuus9QMs1Y
I muted the audio because I apparently had a cold at the time and it's nothing but me sniffling over and over again and making stupid dialogue references.
We did take a few things -- I mean, "archived" a few things that were left behind because they didn't spend the money to strike the sets when they were done filming. Lugging the door out of there SUCKED but it was totally awesome to have it for a few years. I wound up selling this stuff on EBay around 2008 or so.
I had the plastic fake plant that Catfish threatens the water tentacle with for a long, long time but wound up selling it too.
