Sure. For context, this guy is built like a truck, so if he wants to do something you really can't stop him.

He drank an entire 750 ML bottle by himself on the 4 hour ride over. In the car. We told him not to, but he just kept going. I figured he'd just pass out when we got to the AirBnB, but he decided he wanted to go to the brewery and charged off. When we got there, he completely devolved and tried to go to sleep on a bench, told everybody in the place to fuck themselves, and just helped himself to the nachos on the plate. Pulled them over and dipped his fingers in like a claw game and shoveled nacho cheese all over his face and clothing. At this point, the staff have discovered a giant drunk on their patio and are looking for him to leave - so was I. He'd taken his shoes off at this point and fallen face down on the bench. I told my friend to go get the car and babysat the guy for the 10 minutes it took for the car to get there, during which he refused to relax, got rejected by the bar for a drink, and somehow broke his big toe (we found this out later).

The next day he woke up and started drinking again. It was better because he'd go to sleep for a couple hours, then wake up to drink straight out of the community champagne bottle, then back to bed.

It's incredibly sad and it was a pretty horrible weekend. I'd love for him to get help but when you bring it up its just "God's gonna take me when it's my time'. I think I'm just going to keep distance from here on out.

Has everyone seen the new "Nightwatch" image released today?

    https://hyper-resolution.org/view.html?i=Rijksmuseum/SK-C-5/SK-C-5_VIS_5-um_2020-09-08

    It's 925 000 x 775 000 pixels, or over 700 GP. That's 5 microns per pixel when you zoom in!

Rob Erdmann has a thread with some details and background:

    https://twitter.com/erdmann/status/1477946996384313344

(it was assembled (in part) with my hobby image processing library! :boast: he talks about it in that pycon talk)

Last month I was at the family cemetery to bury my aunt who passed away. Whilst walking around this tiny, old cemetery outside of Seward, KS we came across a random grave and my mother lost her fucking mind because she knew the story of how this guy and his brother (two gravestones over) died.

Christmas of 192? the towns of Seward and Radium were gathered at St. Francis Xavier for the Christmas pageant. But two escaped convicts had traveled to the area because they heard that these two brothers in this area were rich and they were going to rob them. On Christmas night these convicts break into the brother's house, capture them both, torture one of them to death, and cut out the tongue of the other. Eventually when the convicts realize there isn't shit here they shoot the still living brother and run away. The now tongueless, shot brother doesn't die and manages to make his way into town and goes into the Church where the Christmas pageant was happening. So all the men leave to try to chase down the criminals / take the brother into Larned to the hospital / get the Sharif. The women and Children were left behind at the Church and basically were locked in on Christmas night and couldn't go home.

The reason my mother knew this story was because her mother, my grandmother was one of the kids at the pageant. No one knew this / knew this story until the last few weeks of my Grandmother's life. She was dying of a brain tumor and the last few weeks as she completely lost her mind were pretty bad I'm told (I'm forever grateful for my mother and my aunts taking that on). But at some point she woke up screaming about seeing this man come in to the Christmas pageant with a bloody mouth and blood everywhere and she was crying for her daddy not to leave and to take her home. Her dad of course was one of the men who went out to find the criminals.

They did find the criminals. They arrested them. They were convicted and executed. The tongueless brother testified against them and then killed himself shortly after. His brother's tombstone read Christmas day and the other one was ~ 15 months later. Even with suicide, they still buried him in the Catholic cemetery which would have been a bit of a scandal back in the 20s but his obituary called out something along the lines of the Christmas day crime never left him and was really to blame for his death. My family found this story buried in the archives but the gravestones proved the story was real.

I know that is barely related to this story but I hadn't had a chance to tell that one yet.

Woke up this morning to the neighbor calling saying there's a guy on your upstairs back porch with a backpack, I peak out the blinds, sure enough, there's a dude looking in the other windows. My GF had just left so there was no car in the driveway so he thought no one was home.

Call 911, go downstairs, waiting by the front door for the cops when he peaks in the front door window, I'm staring at him, he's staring at me, I ask through the window "can I help you?" He mumbles "sorry, wrong house" and he walks down the driveway to the street. Just in time, cop car comes up, officer starts talking to the guy, I come out and say "that's him! he was on my porch!" Dude starts running, 3 cops are now chasing him, they all shoot their tazers and either miss or don't take effect, guy is running and yelling "what'd I do! what'd I do!" they chase him around the corner and I don't see them for a bit. 10 mins later, cops come back, said they caught him 3 blocks away, ask if I want to do a "drive by" or a "look by" or something, where I get in the back of the cop car, they drive by where the guy is being held, and if I can positively identify him. Of course I will, I say, and we go see him, yeah of course it's the same guy. They book him, go back to my house, find out he left his backpack on my porch upstairs, search that: contains 2 dirty (mismatched) socks, a charging cable, and what looked like a bottle of spray deodorant. They pack it all up, give me the case number, and head out.

Found the guy on the jail booking site, looks like he has one prior burglary from 2 years ago.

Suffice it to say, I'm a bit shaken up, mainly because he got on my back porch without me hearing him. If I had a dog he would've no doubt barked and scared him off. I'm also the rare Florida man without a gun, but now I want to change that. Anyone have any home-defense firearm recommendations?

Don’t fall on your face. It’s a bad idea.

Things are better. Broke my nose. They couldn’t stop the bleeding and my heart started acting up. Scary for about 10 minutes. I’m stable now and resting. They might keep me for a few days.
