Nvidia Folks
I can't remember if I posted this before... But it might affect a few people and thought I'd give people a heads up!! For some reason when an Nvidia card detects a HDMI Display of any kind it will default to Limited RGB color. Even my monitor which I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable, it shows up in the Nvidia Control Panel as a HDMI Display.

If your display shows up as HDMI here, then your running in Limited RGB unless you run this tool.
This sucks as Nvidia automatically forces the display into limited RGB displaying 16-255 color rather than 0-255. Some monitors have a setting for this usually called HDMI Black Level or something similar. But that can cause banding and generally worse color.
Anyway I wrote this utility to change between Limited RGB & Full RGB. As the change requires changing quite a few registry keys that can be completely different depending on the hardware in your system. Anyway this app scans the registry and does it for you. :)
App: http://shadowdane.com/public/NvidiaRGB/NvidiaSetFullRGB.zip (Requires .NET 3.5 Framework)
I also included the source as I know some people are can be bitchy about something that fucks with your registry... and yes it's VB.Net. I'm a Network guy I can't be bothered to learn C#.

25 tagsWhat do you think is the single best science fiction story you've ever read? I think I've probably hit most of the big ones but trying to see what else I could check out.

25 tagsThe Arcane Dimensions mod for Quake has been released. See this func_msgboard thread for download link, pictures, other info, and discussion:
==> http://www.celephais.net/board/view_thread.php?id=61270 <==
This is one of the biggest Quake mods ever, no matter whether you measure it by file size, play time, polish level, or the combined mojo of the mod authors.
Before I get into more details here, a couple of important bits to mention:
- Right now it is recommended to use the developer-latest build of Quakespasm as the Quake engine for playing this mod: http://quakespasm.ericwa.com/job/quakespasm-sdl2/lastStableBuild/artifact/quakespasm-r1268.zip
- This mod is pretty memory-hungry, so it's a good idea to use command-line arguments like "-heapsize 256000 -zone 4096" when launching it.
If you REALLY want to see more media (although maybe you don't want to spoil yourself eh?), the authors have been posting shots of their work for a while on twitter. For example: https://twitter.com/SimsOCallaghan/media

OK so, what is it?
It's a gameplay mod and textures and maps from sock (project lead), as well as maps from mfx, FifthElephant, ionous, Scampie, and Lunaran. The readme also credits Lunaran with "Animation, Art, Code Support", Eric Wasylishen (has done a lot of work on Quakespasm and on level compiler tools) for "LD Compiler Support and Level Design", Corey Jones for "Animation and Code Support", and Andrew Denner for "Art pipeline tools and Code Support".
These guys are some of the best Quake-content-machines, several of them current or ex-pro developers, all of them great at producing inventive stuff that still feels Quake-y.
The mod includes new weapons and many new monsters, including repurposing some models from other mods or Quake-era games. (The end of the readme has a long list of credits for models, sounds, and textures.) It adds support for breakable environments, a new particle system, and other new mapping toys. It's open source and has a lot of documentation for the purposes of supporting further maps.
Install & run it like any other Quake mod. I.e. unzip it into a new folder parallel with your id1 folder. By default this will be a folder named "ad_v1_42final" although you can rename it whatever, as long as you provide the right folder name with the -game option on the command line. So for example after unzipping the mod into that folder, you would run Quakespasm with the arguments "-heapsize 256000 -zone 4096 -game ad_v1_42final".
Or if you're already a user of Quake Injector, then you should now see an option there for installing Arcane Dimensions. If you're launching through Quake Injector, do remember to configure the heapsize and zone arguments to be big enough.
=====
Pro tip #1: If for some reason you don't own Quake, it's really cheap right now on GOG and Steam! FYI all you need to play Quake or its mods are the pak0.pak and pak1.pak files from a copy of Quake. Make a folder named "id1" in the same spot as your Quakespasm executable, put pak0.pak and pak1.pak in the "id1" folder, and you are set.
Pro tip #2: See the mod's readme for a list of "test maps" that are not part of the campaign; lots of those are neat to check out.
I know folks are busy this time of year, so maybe I'll bump and/or repost this later.
P.S.: Quake yeah!

25 tagsHere's a curious piece of cinematic history. Black Angel. Has anyone heard of it before?
As viewers sat down to watch ‘Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back’ in 1980, they were shown a short film. It was so mysterious and dark that many never forgot it. Its name was Black Angel.
The project began when Roger Christian, Art Director on ‘Episode IV: A New Hope’, was given the green light by George Lucas to turn his fantasy script into a short film. Having spent years designing droids and space stations, he now set about creating a medieval fantasy world, the likes of which the world had never seen before.
But then it was lost. For decades, it was thought the film had gone the way of Han Solo, frozen in time. But then, in 2011, a negative was discovered by complete chance, and painstakingly restored frame by frame. The legend has been brought back to life, and it’s available for you to download on iTunes today.
You can watch the full (short) film here till the end of the month: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L8pHKP-vv4 -

24 tagsWhenever you get denied for an insurance claim follow the following 4 steps.
1) Call Insurance Company and request the records of everyone who accessed your records and their job title/qualifications you are allowed this as part of HIPAA laws. If it is a legitimate claim there is a chance they will reverse the decision.
2) If they do not reverse their decision, either you or have your doctor file an internal appeal with the insurance company.
3) If that still doesn't work then you can request an external state level appeal (this can only be done after the internal appeal concludes so it can take months)
4) If none of that works Die in Agony, or hope that you can switch to a different insurance. -
