ShackCast Season 2, Episode 1: Super Tennis

Mar 23, 2008 2:18pm CST tags: Shackcast
NAMEThe ShackCast is back for a second season, bringing with it the same goofy commentary in a tighter package, as well as a few other surprises. We'll be playing with the format as we go, and have some interesting things planned for future casts. Do continue to send in your questions and comments to Shackcast@Shacknews.com.

Today on the Cast, the staffers adjust to the tyrannical, yet pleasant rule of their guest host. Also, the week's news is briefly digested, Faylor counteracts a dull release period by gushing on golf games, Steve squeezes cows into submission, and Aaron professes his perverse love of video game olfaction.

Music provided by Shacknews community band Jesuit Arrival.

ShackCast 27: Burnout Paradise, Faylor Flips Out

Jan 18, 2008 2:08pm CST tags: Shackcast, Valve, Podcast
NAMEJoin us for this surreal episode of the ShackCast, in which Faylor, much like a ninja might, totally flips out at Nick for speculating about Valve's upcoming Team Fortress 2 changes.

We also discussed some news, including the Independent Game Festival Audience Awards (go download and vote!), Kane & Lynch's million sales, Super Smash Bros. Brawl's delay, Uwe Boll stepping down from big-budget films, the video game industry getting involved in Washington lobbying, and Sam & Max on Wii (or not).

There are impressions of Supreme Commander on Xbox 360 and the full version of Burnout Paradise, and of course we dedicate some time to reader mail. Steak, a current obsession among Shacknews regulars, is on the menu.

ShackCast 25: Game of the Year Awards 2007

Jan 05, 2008 4:01pm CST tags: Shackcast, Podcast
NAMEWelcome to the new year of ShackCasts. This week, with little major news, we mainly focused on talking about our nominees and winners for the top category in our Game of the Year Awards 2007. It was a great year with many great releases, as we hope you all agree.

We also spoke a little bit about what we've been playing in the couple weeks since we last recorded a show, which included Assassin's Creed (Faylor vs. Breckon!), Scene It!, Call of Duty 4, the board game Alhambra, and more. Steve, once again, had some kind of wacky emergency, this time involving his neighbor and a quick trip to the hospital.

As usual, this is all capped off with reader mail (including one from mr.sleepy!). Don't forget to send in your questions and comments about video games, the Shack, or the ShackCast to shackcast@shacknews.com!

ShackCast 24: Duke Nukem Forever, C&C Tiberium

Dec 21, 2007 3:23pm CST tags: Shackcast, MMO, Podcast
NAMEDuke Nukem Forever and its teaser dominated the news this week, and so it kicked off ShackCast 24, but there were plenty of other topics for Chris Remo, Steve Gibson, Chris Faylor and Nick Breckon--the announcement of Command and Conquer Tiberium (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), low sales of Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis, Jerry Bruckheimer and his MTV-funded game studio, the possibility of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. MMO, and more.

As usual, this is all capped off with reader mail. Don't forget to send in your questions and comments about video games, the Shack, or the ShackCast to shackcast@shacknews.com! Even if your name isn't Pendergrass!

Dec 14, 2007 7:02pm CST tags: Shackcast, NPD, Activision, Podcast
NAMEShackCast 23 features Chris Remo, Chris Faylor, and Nick Breckon--but where's the ever-scatalogical Steve Gibson? This web 2.0 broadcast contains a twist worthy of M. Night Shamalamadingdong! You will just have to listen yourself!

In the news, we touch on Activision and Harmonix squaring off over Guitar Hero and Rock Band controllers, the NPD industry sales data for November, Killzone 2's doctored screenshots and the practice of altering screenshots, and the arrest made through Call of Duty 4 on Live.

Those current events are followed up with discussion of Unreal Tournament 3, the Burnout Paradise demo, GripShift, and, of course, reader mail from good old Pendergrass.

ShackCast 21: Gerstmann Edition

Dec 01, 2007 2:59pm CST tags: Shackcast, Podcast
NAMEBecause yesterday's ShackCast 20 was recorded prior to the Jeff Gerstmann firing controversy, we felt we should get back on the mic to discuss it.

Chris Remo, Chris Faylor, and Nick Breckon discuss the facts and rumors regarding the firing from GameSpot/CNET, general trends in game journalism, and the relationship between publishers, ad sales, and editorial. We also take a few questions from readers regarding this specific incident and the larger environment that surrounds it.

Finally, for those bothered by the annoying voice clipping in yesterday's episode, that should be fixed today. Sorry about that!

Nov 21, 2007 10:14am CST tags: Shackcast, Podcast, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Time Crisis 4
NAMEThere wasn't much news in this short work week, so for today's laid-back episode we mainly talked about what we've been playing. Chris Remo, Steve Gibson, Chris Faylor, and Nick Breckon discuss Time Crisis 4 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on PS3, Mass Effect on Xbox 360, Crysis on PC, the just-released Rock Band, and Call of Duty 4.

We wrap it up with some reader mail harkening back to the good old days of competitive Quake, and some discussion about Shacknews' ad policy. While listening to our reader mail, follow along with these pages of classic Quakeworld demos and Quake poll results.

ShackCast 17: Bungie, Xbox 360 in Japan, Marky Mark, Rock Band, Idiocy, Remo Song

Nov 09, 2007 7:18pm CST tags: Shackcast, Bungie, DLC, Podcast
NAMEShackCast 17 features what has become the standard lineup of Chris Remo, Steve Gibson, Chris Faylor, and Nick Breckon. Internally, this was our second take at this podcast, our initial effort being something we would rather not foist upon our trusting public. We ended up discussing Bungie and its purported original game in development, the Xbox 360's slight victory over PS3 for one week in Japan, Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka work on a new game, the crappiness of collectors' editions, Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne, amazing Rock Band DLC, and controversies involving Take-Two Interactive and Hellgate: London.

That plus reader mail, what we've been playing, and a Remo song about Peggle from the perspective of Chris Faylor. Faylor's Peggle Song was part our Jam Sessions contest, and its lyrics were written by Shacker liqker.

Listeners weight in with comments and questions on Soldier of Fortune Payback, Rock Band, why Gordon Freeman has no feet (and sometimes no hands), exclusive sports franchises, the moon, and more.

Finally, we've got two of Chris Remo's recordings of Shacker-written songs submitted to our Jam Sessions contest: Public Servers by KalLanta, and Gordon's Crowbar Blues by quadeh.

Oct 26, 2007 1:11pm CST tags: Shackcast, MMO, Podcast, Eye of Judgment, Spore
On Episode 15 of the ShackCast, Steve Gibson, Chris Remo, Nick Breckon, and Chris Faylor discuss an astounding variety of topics.

These subjects include Spore, Eye of Judgment (PS3), Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3), the rumored new Star Wars MMO, Samba de Amigo Wii, Soldier of Fortune 3, Hellgate: London, Jade Raymond at the grocery story, and more. We also branch out into the realm of visuals this week, supplying you, our gentle listener, with visual aides for the Impossible Creatures segment.

Unfortunately, in our rush to bring you the latest in Shack auditory entertainment, we neglected to sketch out the traditional timestamped breakdown. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

ShackCast 14: There Can Be Only One, Super Mario Galaxy, Turok, Guitar Hero 3 PC, Brutal Legend

Oct 19, 2007 7:07am CST tags: Shackcast, Games: PC & Console, Guitar Hero
NAMEThis rather meandering episode features hands-on impressions of Super Mario Galaxy, the upcoming Turok game, and the PC version of Guitar Hero III--including discussion of that game's bafflingly steep system requirements and recommendations.

There's also time spent on Tim Schafer and Double Fine's just-announced metal adventure Brutal Legend, as well as listener mail. All this is somehow wrapped up in a tenuous framework of terrible Highlander metaphor.

Oct 14, 2007 10:30am CST tags: Shackcast, Electronic Arts, BioWare, Pandemic, XBLA, Podcast, Portal, Switchball
NAMEFor this week's ShackCast, Remo spent some time hands-on with Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) and several of its new characters--Pit from Kid Icarus, Meta Knight from the Kirby series, the new Samus and her Zero Suit form, and the just-revealed Sonic the Hedgehog.

Nick was at Epic's offices checking out Unreal Tournament 3, which he feels is underrepresented by its recent demo. Carlos met with Sierra to check out several upcoming PC and Xbox Live Arcade downloadable games; some--such as Aces of the Galaxy and Commanders: Attack of the Genos--are promising, and some--Battlestar Galactica--are not.

Plus, all of us played through Portal and loved it, because it is lovely. Finally, we discuss Double Fine's new game announcement and Electronic Arts' acquisition of BioWare and Pandemic Studios.

Episode 12 focuses almost entirely on game impressions, with no time left for news. On tap is discussion of Gears of War on PC, Crysis, Portal, Guitar Hero III and its differences on the three main platforms, Hellgate: London, and Dementium: The Ward on DS.

Faylor also played a bit of Treasure's N64 classic Sin & Punishment, officially available in the West for the first time thanks to Virtual Console on Wii, and we have some listener mail involving missing game discs at retail and the unsettling growing number of simultaneously offered models of various consoles.

ShackCast Episode 11: Halo 3, Team Fortress 2, Hellgate: London, Crysis, Tokyo Game Show

Sep 29, 2007 12:54pm CST tags: Shackcast, Podcast, Halo 3
NAMEWe're trying out publishing the podcast on Friday going forward, to better line up with how news is released. Unfortunately, we ran into numerous bizarre technical problems, hence the later-than-intended release this week. Let us know what you think of the new schedule, and keep sending your questions and comments into shackcast@shacknews.com.

Episode 11 starts off with plenty of Halo 3 discussion, followed by Team Fortress 2 impressions and Nick's highlights (and lowlights) of TGS, including Metal Gear Solid 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.

Nick and Steve have been playing and enjoying Hellgate: London, and Remo finds out Crysis' multiplayer component is more ambitious than he anticipated. Faylor really wants Samba de Amigo on Wii, Remo likes Jam Sessions on DS, Steve and Faylor are mixed on Clive Barker's Jericho, and Retro Studios has crushed our dreams by debunking its own Metroid Dread rumors.
