Make Great LittleBigPlanet Level, Get a Job

Sep 02, 2008 7:15pm CST tags: LittleBigPlanet
The level editor in MediaMolecule's upcoming customizable PS3 platformer LittleBigPlanet could net talented creators more than internet fame--it could land them a paying job.

Speaking to CVG, producer Pete Smith said that the team at MediaMolecule plans to closely watch the game's oft-touted user-created level marketplace for talented Little Big auteurs. "We will be aware of who those awesome designers are and certainly there's the potential to get them building levels as part of [our] team," he said.

Smith mentioned two possibilities for the designers who rise to the cream of the crop. "[We could] get the top ten guys and commission them to make some amazing stuff for us," he offered. Or a lucky creator could skip that process and become a real-deal game designer: "It'll be a great way for us to recruit great new designers."

Aspiring designers have just under two months to polish their resumes and their skills, as LittleBigPlanet releases in late October.

The game is coming to the PlayStation 3 as a full Blu-ray release this October. For more on the game, check out our hands-on preview.

LittleBigPlanet Will Let Users Sell Custom Content a la iTunes App Store; Everything Free at Launch

Jul 21, 2008 12:40pm CST tags: LittleBigPlanet, Sony
Media Molecule's upcoming platformer LittleBigPlanet (PS3) will eventually allow players to profit off of their user-created levels or add-ons by offering the content online at a price, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has revealed.

"What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them," SCEE president David Reeves told PS3 Fanboy.

Described by Shacknews editor Chris Faylor as an "adorable physics-driven platformer," the game places a pronounced emphasis on community-created content shared among its player base. Reeves added that the user-side content-sale ... Read more

LittleBigPlanet is the Real Deal

Jul 16, 2008 1:33am CST tags: LittleBigPlanet, E3 2008, Preview
It was on the fifth playthrough of the same level that I decided LittleBigPlanet was definitely going to be good.

People continue to ask what is so special about the game. "It's just another platformer," they say. "What's so special about this game?"

Near the end of the demo level, I had to coordinate with three people to defeat a boss. The boss was spitting out flaming logs, and we had to bounce them back at him by pushing a platform back and forth, like a cooperative version of Breakout mixed with a Ouija board. When's the last time you did that in a platformer?

The joyous, freewheeling momentum of the game is what sells it. You're always on cruise mode in LittleBigPlanet, even in death. Just as something like LEGO Star Wars can be fun without punishment, so is LittleBigPlanet. But you can't affix a pair of underpants to your friend's face in the middle of Star Wars.

Even simple platforming actions like running and jumping are made new by the satisfying weight... Read more

Media Molecule's cutesy and customizable PlayStation 3 platformer LittleBigPlanet is now expected to arrive in October, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe revealed at an event today.

Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet Hit UK in September; Resistance 2 Slated for November UK Release

Mar 26, 2008 12:08pm CST tags: Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2
Sony Computer Entertainment has provided a tentative timetable of this fall's major PlayStation 3 releases, videogamer reports.

According to the site, Media Molecule's cutesy and customizable platformer LittleBigPlanet (PS3) will arrive in the UK alongside Guerrilla Games' long-awaited first-person shooter Killzone 2 (PS3) this September.

Insomniac's launch title sequel Resistance 2 (PS3), SCE's other major first person shooter, will then hit UK retailers in November, complete with 60-person multiplayer and 8-player online co-op.

The November timeframe puts Resistance 2 in direct competition with Epic's Gears of War 2 (X360), just as the original Resistance faced off against the first Gears of War (X360) entry in November 2006.

Though Sony Computer Entertainment has yet to confirm North American release dates for the above titles, such major PlayStation 3 releases have been marked by near-simultaneous releases in North America and Europe.

The publisher previously expressed its intent to ship Resistance 2 in North America this fall, with a worldwide global release of LittleBigPlanet in that same general timeframe.

LittleBigPlanet Screens Sell PS3s

Feb 27, 2008 4:23am CST tags: LittleBigPlanet, Screenshots
Other than the just-dated Metal Gear Solid 4, it's hard to imagine a game selling more PlayStation 3 consoles ahead of its release than Media Molecule's ambitious cooperative platformer LittleBigPlanet.

These particular images form a sort of sea-going pirate narrative, so make sure to view them in their proper order for maximum swashbuckling enjoyment.

Expect LittleBigPlanet to hit this fall exclusively on the PlayStation 3, with a possible beta arriving in late spring.

While braving the crowds and adult film stars of this year's Consumer Electronics Show, intrepid reporter Nick Breckon attended a demonstration of Media Molecule's PlayStation 3 cooperative platformer LittleBigPlanet. The prognosis? Looking good.
For my part, no matter how many times I see this game, I can't help but smile.

Senior Sony producer Pete Smith was having fun too. "If we're not together we're all gonna die," he exclaimed as the four participating Sackmen faced a particularly challenging pit of lava. Before he had even finished speaking, half the group was quickly left behind. "Waiittt!"

It's amazing that a single game like Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet could make PlayStation 3 owners feel like they didn't make a big $499 mistake. The hype is merited: A hands-on with new content creation tools in the latest build of the game make me want to mess up expensively too. Read on to see why.
The tools giving you the power to add physical elements to your LittleBigPlayplace are incredibly intuitive and user-friendly, and obviously the most exciting of the available options. I can easily see people who have never been into user-created content picking up this game and designing the hell out of level after level.
