Star Trek Online Now Due on Consoles, PC

Jul 28, 2008 9:36am CST tags: Star Trek Online, Cryptic Studios, Screenshots
Months after Perpetual Entertainment ceased its work on Star Trek Online, City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios has confirmed the rumors that it is now handling the sci-fi MMO and will be bringing the once PC-only effort to "both console and PC formats."

The MMO will feature "customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe," going by a post on the game's official site.

It is unclear how much of Perpetual's original work will be reflected in Cryptic Studios' rendition of Star Trek Online. The project is now powered by the studio's internal Cryptic Engine technology, with the first gameplay footage due at this year's Star Trek Convention on August 10--suggesting many of Perpetual's assets are being re-used.

While details on the game's release date or console platforms were not provided, an Xbox 360 edition is a safe assumption, as Cryptic's upcoming Cryptic Engine-powered superhero MMO Champions Online is due out on both PC and Xbox 360 next spring.

City of Heroes Devs Announce Champions Online

Feb 20, 2008 3:49pm CST tags: Champions Online, MMO, Cryptic Studios, Screenshots
Cryptic Studios, developer of the superhero MMO City of Heroes, have today announced their next project: Champions Online, a self-published superhero MMO based on the popular pen-and-paper game Champions RPG.

The key bullet point of Champions Online will be customization, with Cryptic boasting a "near infinite" amount of character-defining traits.

Says the press release: "Gamers will be able to create their hero's name, back story, costume, powers and abilities as well as design their own personal arch-enemy and his or her back story, which will guarantee a truly unique experience."

"We thought carefully about which IP to select for our next game," said Cryptic chief creative officer Jack Emmert. "I've been playing the Champions RPG since it first came out and I love both the rich history and the wide array of compelling characters which made this an obvious choice for Cryptic Studios."

Champions Online is slated for a spring 2009 release. A website for the project has also been launched.

Cryptic Prepping Superhero MMO for PC, Consoles; New Red Faction, Aliens Games Named

Feb 14, 2008 10:15am CST tags: MMO, Gearbox, Games: PC & Console, Cryptic Studios, Champions Online
With Marvel Universe Online (PC, X360) officially canceled and the studio no longer involved with City of Heroes (PC), the latest effort from superhero MMO developer Cryptic Studios is Champions Online, a super-powered MMO planned for PC and consoles.

Word of the project comes from a writeup detailing gaming publication Game Informer's March issue. No further details are available at this time.

Gearbox's upcoming Aliens shooter will be called Aliens: Colonial Marines when it hits PC and unspecifid consoles--most likely PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360--in 2009, the article revealed. It also contained the official title of Volition's next Red Faction entry, Red Faction: Guerilla.

Confirmed: Marvel Universe Online Canceled

Feb 11, 2008 10:33am CST tags: MMO, Games: PC & Console, Cryptic Studios
Ending months of speculation, Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim has confirmed that Marvel Universe Online is no longer in development.

According to Kim, the project's cancellation and was "an amicable decision" reached by both Microsoft and Marvel, and stemmed from the changing MMO landscape. "Clearly there are emerging models that have come about," he told MTV Multiplayer, pointing to alternative business strategies such as ad-supported play and item-oriented microtransactions.

Announced in 2006, Marvel Universe Online was planned for release on both PC and Xbox 360. The superhero MMO was under development by the veteran team of superpower-friendly developers at Cryptic Studios, which had previously been sued by Marvel for its work with the PC MMO City of Heroes.

"When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of Marvel Universe Online, we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO," noted Kim. "If you really look at the data there's basically one that's successful and everything else wouldn't meet our level or definition of commercial... Read more

Rumor: Star Trek Online Team Laid Off

Jan 17, 2008 5:36pm CST tags: Games: PC & Console, Rumor, Cryptic Studios
Following the cancellation of Star Trek Online, reports are coming in that members of the P2 Entertainment development team have today been laid off.

A WarCry article on the matter cites multiple sources at the company, though P2 has issued no comment at this time.

News circulated earlier in the week indicated that City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios had interviewed employees of the now-defunct P2 Entertainment team, opening up the possibility of the dead project being assimilated under new management.

Rumor: Cryptic Studios Picking Up Star Trek MMO

Jan 15, 2008 4:45pm CST tags: MMO, Star Trek Online, Rumor, Cryptic Studios
Cryptic Studios, developers of the successful MMORPG series City of Heroes (PC), confirmed that the company has been interviewing employees of P2 Entertainment, reports TrekMovie.com.

Though the studio would not confirm if it is currently handling the development of Star Trek Online (PC), Cryptic's tapping of P2 employees seats the studio as the most likely candidate to continue the project. P2 Entertainment was revealed yesterday to have ceased development on the title, transferring the license to an unknown developer.

Rumors of Cryptic's involvement began with a story published this morning on w00tstudios. The company was previously known to be working on the superhero MMO Marvel Universe Online (PC, X360), though rumors strongly suggest the project has been scrapped, with Cryptic refusing to comment one way or another.

Both Cryptic and P2 were reached for comment, but have not responded as of this writing.

More on Marvel Universe Online Troubles

Nov 15, 2007 12:01pm CST tags: MMO, Games: PC & Console, Cryptic Studios
Speaking with 1up, an anonymous source has detailed some of the issues that are supposedly leading to the rumored cancellation of Cryptic Studios' Marvel Universe Online (PC, X360), which was announced in 2006.

"It reminded me a lot of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Running at 5 fps," claimed the tipster, who is said to have seen the game about six months ago. "[It] kept crashing and apparently hammered the hell out of both the console's hard drive and Live infrastructure."

He or she elaborated that the project has been, "in the shitter for a LOOOONG time." Other details indicate that the game's fighting system had yet to be decided up until a few months ago, with the team split between multi-button combo-based combat and the one-button fighting system used in most MMOs, such as Cryptic's own City of Heroes (PC).

Another tidbit suggests that the developer was having problems figuring out how to implement popular Marvel characters without detracting from the game... Read more

NCsoft Acquires City of Heroes IP, Opens New Studio, Plans 'Major Reinvestment' in City of Heroes

Nov 06, 2007 3:23pm CST tags: MMO, NCSoft, City of Heroes, Sony, Cryptic Studios
MMO publisher NCsoft has obtained complete ownership of the City of Heroes intellectual property for an undisclosed sum and is opening a new development studio staffed by members of the game's original team in Mountain View, CA.

The company's plans for the superhero PC MMO include new expansions and sequels. NCsoft claims it acquired "key members" of the City of Heroes team--including lead designer Matt Miller, lead engineer Aaron Brady, and lead artist Ken Morse--from Cryptic Studios, which originally developed the game and previously split ownership of the IP with NCsoft. All members of the City of Heroes team have been offered jobs at NCsoft, according to Cryptic's FAQ on the sale.

"We're happy to announce that NCsoft has acquired full ownership of the City of Heroes IP," said NCsoft executive producer and new studio manager Brian Clayton. "Our plans are clear. We are now in a position to make a major reinvestment in the City of Heroes product line."

The new office represents the second studio NCsoft has formally... Read more

Marvel Universe Online Announcement

Sep 27, 2006 1:26pm CST tags: MMO, NCSoft, Games: PC, Cryptic Studios
Back in 2004, Marvel sued NCSoft and Cryptic Studios, saying that City of Heroes was violating Marvel copyrights. Cryptic Studios' new game certainly won't do that, as they will be developing Marvel Universe Online, the MMORPG coming to Xbox 360 and Windows Vista.
"The vision behind the alliance of Microsoft Game Studios, Cryptic Studios and Marvel is to expand the MMO genre and create an epic gaming experience exclusively for Xbox 360 and Windows Vista gamers to experience together online," said Frank Pape, senior director of business development, Microsoft Game Studios. "Cryptic Studios is widely respected for their established track record of innovation and understanding of the MMO space, and they are a perfect fit for the creation of the best possible experience in 'Marvel Universe Online.'"

What will this mean for City of Heroes/Villains? Not much according to NCSoft, who send along this letter from CoH lead designer Matt Miller.

Late Night Consoling

Jul 26, 2006 10:10pm CST tags: MMO, Capcom, Gearbox, Pandemic, Rockstar, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Games: Console, Sony, Cryptic Studios
There have sure been quite a few recurring rumors this week.
  • Xbox 360 Price Cut Rumored (Again), Microsoft Denies (Again)

    [xbox360]

Today, rumors flared up yet again that Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Xbox 360 console later this year. A report from DigiTimes claimed that the news came courtesy of Taiwanese OEM component manufacturers. DigiTimes speculates that the broad capabilities of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3, which includes a hard disk drive and a Blu-ray Disc reader, are giving Microsoft reason to take a more aggressive price strategy. Apparently, the manufacturers' claims are based on a reported 15-20% decrease of manufacturing costs due to more efficient production. However, it seems just as likely that Microsoft would want to hang on to those savings in an attempt to edge out of the per-unit loss currently taken on each Xbox 360 console, particularly given the already fairly substantial pricing discrepancy between Xbox 360 and PS3.

For its part, Microsoft Taiwan Corporation denied the claims, calling them "misinformation." When contacted for comment, Microsoft's home base operations issued a similar refutation. Last month, the Microsoft marketing employee-run Gamerscore Blog stated that there are "no plans for a price drop this fall."

  • Previews "Announce" Assassin's Creed and Mercenaries 2 on 360?

    [xbox360]

Ever since the respective announcements of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed and Pandemic's Mercenaries 2, both of which are currently only confirmed for the PlayStation 3 platform, gamers have been speculating that both games will eventually make their way to Xbox 360. In the case of Assassin's Creed, it seems almost inevitable. During X05, in the game's pre-official announcement days as Project Assassin, the game was mentioned by Microsoft's Peter Moore as coming to Xbox 360. Ubisoft is also known for its widely multiplatform releases.

This week, two previews surfaced on Computer and Video Games, one for Mercenaries 2 and the other for Assassin's Creed. CVG is owned by Future Publishing, which handles The Official Xbox Magazine. To make matters a bit more conclusive, both previews are branded with that publication's logo. If previews of the two titles are indeed being published under the auspices of Microsoft's official gaming print publication, it would seem that the Xbox 360 versions of the games are all but confirmed.

  • Gearbox Grinds Nintendo's Gears

    [nintendo]

Speaking to IGN, Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford today stated that the studio behind the acclaimed Brothers in Arms franchise will be developing for Nintendo's upcoming Wii console. "Gearbox Software is enthusiastically supporting the Wii," said Pitchford, though he did not elaborate on any specific games in development. Pitchford also commented on the currently apparently pros and cons of the system, placing the unique controller in both categories. "The strengths of the Nintendo Wii include the price, the unique interface, the sure-bet library of games based on the great Nintendo properties and the promise back catalogue of classic games from Nintendo and others that they have partnered with," he noted. "The weaknesses of the system include its lower relative power when compared to other next-gen consoles and the unique interface requiring more dedicated focus specifically for the platform."

Today's announcement is yet another potential vindication of the alleged Ubisoft release schedule leaked earlier this year and officially denied by the publisher. Among other platforms, the list included the then-named Revolution as being a destination for "Brothers in Arms 3"--presumably Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway, which has since been announced for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. As IGN points out, Ubisoft has already proven to be one of the stronger third party publishers at the system's launch, with Red Steel an exclusive for the system and most of the marketing for the multiplatform Rayman Raving Rabbids being focused on the Wii version.

  • PS3 in "Better Place Vis-a-Vis Microsoft With Relation to Launch," Says Rein

    [ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo]

In a video interview with Eurogamer published today, Epic's outspoken VP Mark Rein commented on various issues surrounding the games industry and Epic's upcoming projects. While he spent a great deal of time speaking on his latest vocal cause, slamming Intel for shrinking the PC gaming market via the widespread adoption of Intel integrated graphics solutions in PCs, he also had some words on Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3 and why Sony is right where it needs to be at this stage. Despite the flak Sony has been taking from various quarters in regards to PS3's price and known game selection, Rein believes the company is on track. "I think one of the things you have to consider right now is that Sony is at that awkward stage where Microsoft was last year. Developers are just getting finished hardware now, which is a long time before ship. That's pretty good," he said. "Developers did not have finished [Xbox 360] hardware last year at E3. So, Sony's actually maybe in a better place vis-a-vis Microsoft with relation to launch. I'm actually quite surprised at how good the [PS3] games look considering that situation."

Rein had mixed feelings about Microsoft's Live Anywhere and Xbox Live services. "As a business guy it scares me a little bit, because, are they horning in on my relationship with my customer or not?" he pointed out, in reference to Epic's preference for working with its own server architecture and online features. "I think that's why EA was a late in coming to Xbox Live, was they were a little worried about that." Rein indicated that on the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 2007, Epic will take a more traditional PC-like approach. Still, as a gamer, he sees a lot of potential in Microsoft's initiatives. "One of the things I really liked about the Bill Gates presentation [at E3] was the idea that, 'Look, these things can coexist,' and we're huge fans of that," he said, referring to the convergence between PC and consoles.

  • Cryptic Coming to Consoles, Hiring Humanities Help

    [ps3] [xbox360] [nintendo]

Cryptic Studios today sent out a note that the MMO developer is holding "open tryouts" for new employees coming from a variety of disciplines. "We’re looking for the best, whether you are a proven industry veteran or a new college grad who wants to break into the business," said president Michael Lewis. "You won’t be surprised to know we’re looking for top-notch programmers and artists, but you might be surprised to find we’re also interested in engineering, economics, linguistics and philosophy majors." Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit the company's official website for more on the application process and the company's upcoming "job fair" appearances at SIGGRAPH, Gen Con, and the Austin Game Conference.

Within the announcement was included the news that the company has multiple MMO titles in the works, coming not only to PC but to unspecified next generation consoles. No further details were given, though the company plans to make announcements later this year. Most recently, Cryptic has been known for its superhero-themed games City of Heroes (PC) and City of Villains (PC).

  • Son of Working Designs

    [ps2] [ps3] [xbox360]

Victor Ireland, former president of defunct niche RPG localization and publishing company Working Designs, appears to be launching a new company. Dubbed Gaijinworks, the only thing the organization currently has to publically show for itself is a splash page and a logo depicting a gear set within a Japanese flag. The site's meta content tags suggest that, like Working Designs, Gaijinworks will likely largely deal in the publishing of Japanese RPGs; listed terms include "RPG," "jRPG," "otaku," "role-playing game," "japanese role-playing game," and others. Two platforms are mentioned as well, "playstation" and "xbox 360," as is "localization." A potential company slogan, "one nation under games," finishes off the list.

No projects have been announced, but more details are expected later this summer.

  • Time-Limited Table Tennis Download on Live

    [xbox360]

As announced last week, a playable demo of Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis (X360) is now available via Xbox Live. The free demo includes single-player and local multiplayer modes, though not an online mode. Interestingly enough, it comes with a catch. The demo will only be functional through the end of August. After that, it will no longer run, nor will it be available for download.

  • Misc. Q&As/Features

IGN has an interview with producer Yoshinori Yamagishi on Square Enix's upcoming RPG sequel Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2).

Eurogamer has an interview with Saint's Row (X360) project lead Christopher Stockman, speaking about Volition's upcoming GTA-esque action game.
