January NPD: Black Ops, Dead Space 2 and Dancing Titles Win Big; Xbox 360 Sells 381K Units

Late last night, market research firm NPD Group released its numberless, retail-only data for the video game industry's business throughout the month of January 2011. Included in the top ten best-selling, combined platform titles for the month feature four dancing games: Just Dance 2, Zumba Fitness, Dance Central, and Michael Jackson: The Experience.

Also battling for a spot on the list were newcomers Dead Space 2 (released January 25) and LittleBigPlanet 2 (released January 18), coming in at third and fourth place, respectively. DC Universe Online also inched onto the list in tenth place. The month's best-selling title was Call of Duty: Black Ops, which launched in November 2010, across five platforms.

At the time of this publishing, Microsoft was the only company to share hardware sales data. According to a press release (sourced by the NPD Group, which shares numbers with companies but not the press and public), Microsoft says its Xbox 360 sold 381,000 units in January, up 48,000 units from the same period last year. This, Microsoft says, places the Xbox 360 as "the leading game console in 2011." Sony has not revealed hardware numbers but offered that its PS3 software sales were up 25 per cent year-over-year.

The complete top ten list from the NPD Group can be found after the break.

And platform specific lists. Not much of a comparable list when older games still rank high because they are on almost every game device on earth. NBA 2k11 (X360, PS3, PSP, Wii, PS2, PC).
